Established in 1951, The Old Post Office Campsite is in a royally fab location for anyone after a peaceful spot to explore the Lake District. Those looking for quiet stays can deliver themselves to this compact site, just on the western border of the Lake District National Park, to enjoy the very best of the area's spectacular setting. You can be at the little village of Santon Bridge in a jiffy (it's just a one-minute walk away) and with the River Irt bordering the site, you’ll likely agree The Old Post Office has got the whole package… Swim, paddle or just bask on the banks of the calm freshwater river that flows right along one side of the site, while avid anglers can scale the choice of catches to be had with salmon, sea and brown trout floundering from the waters. You can borrow a daily or weekly-hire rod from the owners; just arrange this with them when you arrive. The site’s first-class facilities include modern toilets and showers, a laundry room with coin-operated machines, dishwashing sinks and wifi, with well-tended pathways all around the site and timber picnic benches to take in the mountains, river and countryside views. A gift and farm shop is in Santon Bridge a minute's walk away. Dogs are welcome too and with all the walking opportunities in and around the Lakes, a holiday here will really deliver the goods for all…

Em va agradar: The location right next to the river Irt was lovely. Good walks directly from the campsite to Nether Wasdale and onto the lake. Good pub really close by. 50p for a 10 minute shower was good value, just bring 50p’s with you. Andy the site manager was very helpful & friendly and made us feel welcome.

No em va agradar: The pitch 16 was right next to the river but the grass had worn right down to just hard soil. Probably because it’s a popular place to pitch a tent and nearly always one on there. Price for a non electric/ electric pitch was the same. Not sure why this is? The non electric pitches are away from the river bank and slightly inclined. The communal fridge was unusable and needs to be taken to the nearest dump (health hazard). The freezer wasn’t much better but adequate for putting ice blocks in.

Em va agradar: Proximity to river and pub. Friendly campers and host. Close to pub. Book restaurant gets busy

No em va agradar: Showers, washing up area next to chemical waste. Site looks a bit tired and some general gardening and tidying would make it smarter.

Em va agradar: location was fabulous next to a river site was quiet in the country and away from traffic. You are instantly relaxed and chilled Dog friendly and a stones throw from a charming pub or a small cafe You have to use car to get anywhere but if you just want to chill ideal. Never felt so relaxed

Em va agradar: This campsite is well kept and it’s right by the river Irt, showers and toilets are lovely and clean(50p for ten minute shower)20p for the hairdryer and there’s a laundry room that takes pound coins for both machines, you’ll need £2 for the washing machine. Andy that runs the camp is a credit to the place, he’s got good knowledge of the local area and is a nice friendly bloke and goes out his way to be helpful. I’d say about half ten it goes quiet, not that it’s a rowdy camp and everyone that was there for the five days we spent on the site were friendly, everyone has got a hello for you. The bridge inn is a two minute walk and has a good selection of drinks and homemade food and there’s a gift shop and local farm shop not far from the campsite when you turn left leaving the campsite(right for the pub)I would try and bring enough milk, etc for the first night at least, there is a fridge and freezer you can use, there are dish washing stations as well. Summing this campsite up I’d say it’s in an excellent location with a right chilled atmosphere, you won’t regret choosing here and if you like fishing it’s free just bring your own gear, all in all a great little place and I will be recommending it to anyone going camping, can’t wait to go back again

Em va agradar: Absolutely beautiful spot by the river . Andy was super helpful and went out of his way to give us loads of information. The views all around are spectacular . A new favourite - will definitely be back x

No em va agradar: Toilets could be more private if they were a full cubicle and I’d rather not pay extra for a shower . Very small details though . The site is amazing .

Itineraris

Turn off the M6 at Junction 36. Follow A590 west to Broughton-in-Furness, passing through Newby Bridge. Follow the A595 through Bootle, Muncaster to Holmrook. Approaching Holmrook turn right for Santon Bridge; follow this road to the end, passing Irton Hall (on your left) and Wasdale Craft Shop (on your left). At the junction turn left - we are at the bottom of the hill near to the river. Please note - some satellite navigation systems suggest a route via Wrynose Pass and Hardknott Pass. These high level routes are not recommended in the dark, or in adverse weather conditions.

Pull on your comfiest boots and walk yourself to merriment around these Cumbrian parts: just over five miles away in Wasdale is one of Britain’s tiniest churches, St Olafs, with its timber beams thought to have been made from Viking ships. For hungry (and thirsty) fell explorers, the Wasdale Head Inn makes for a welcome pitstop, and the Bridge Inn, just a stroll from the site, is home to the annual ‘Biggest Liar’ competition – no kidding, it’s a real thing… Hikers hotstep to the mighty heights of Scafell Pike and Great Gable (both about seven miles away) and Red Pike (approximately 20 miles north from the site). At the Wasdale valley, as well as nurturing peaks aplenty, canoeists, kayakers and windsurfers alike will rapidly make their way to Wast Water, just five minutes from the site, the deepest lake in the UK. Cycling and walking routes around the lakes and mountains are plentiful, as are the chances for boating and fishing, but if you really want to go off-piste, you could try abseiling, climbing, a high ropes course, or even flying: hot air balloon and paragliding experiences are available for those who want to soar even higher than Scafell.
