Fancy a trip to England’s deepest lake? Perhaps a scramble up the country’s highest mountain? Both of these (Wast Water and Scafell Pike, of course) are within easy reach of The Barn Campsite, as are plenty of other top spots including Coniston Water, the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and the Cumbria coastline. From this Lake District site between Eskdale and Holmrook there are some fine views to be had out over the Eskdale Valley and plenty of space from which to enjoy them. It’s a pitch-free setup here, so you can simply take a wander around and pick the spot that suits you best. Flushing toilets, rubbish bins and three drinking water stations are provided for guests’ use. Raised firepits are allowed on site; along with firewood, the firepits are available from the site at an extra cost. (and in general you’re asked to be considerate and respect the countryside). This is a properly green and rural location (as you’ll spot from the accompanying pics) but it’s not devoid of local amenities – it’s a 10-minute walk to a local pub for some great food and real ales. A little further along the road (a mile and a bit away) is a village store, and there’s a small supermarket about five minutes’ drive away in Holmrook (which also has a pub and some great salmon fishing on the River Irt).

Aquest càmping és molt elogiat per la seva ubicació bonica, vistes impressionants i el propietari, Jonnty, extremadament amable i servicial. Les instal·lacions, com lavabos nets, dutxes d'aigua calenta i un túnel de plàstic per assecar, són molt ben valorades. Els clients valoren les parcel·les planes i ben cuidades, fogueres gratuïtes i la disponibilitat de llenya i ous frescos per comprar. Em va agradar Plenty toilets with loo roll and warm showers, polytunnel was great for hanging bits up, washing pots, and sitting in when rainy. No pitch size limit means you can bring multiple tents for a group. Views are beautiful.

No em va agradar There’s signs mentioning a 10pm noise curfew but unfortunately this was not enforced, and a few loud groups on site until midnight on some nights. We’d hoped for a bit more of a peaceful site, which this wasn’t. Great if you’ve got kids or want to camp as a big group though. Owner is pretty much always there which can be a positive or negative depending on your outlook.

Em va agradar Lovely campsite,great views,10min walk to a great little pub,7 mile from Wast Water also central for the coast,toilets and showers and drying space,and Jonnty the owner a tiptop bloke helpful and knowledgeable nothing is to much trouble defo will be back

Em va agradar Fantastic venue, multiple bathrooms, hot showers, charging point for phones, fire pits and bags of logs,kindling,fire lighters for a tenner. Clean, short grass easy to put pegs in and nothing to catch bottom of tent. Quiet, dog friendly. 15 min to beach and 20 min to wastwater.

Jonty was pleasant friendly and happy to offer advice on where to visit.

Could not recommend more highly!

Em va agradar This campsite is situated in a beautiful location with many amenities nearby. The host is a really lovely and knowledgeable man that really makes staying here a pleasure, can’t wait to stay here again!

Em va agradar Showed up late with late notice and owner stayed up to let us in. He was incredibly helpful and stayed up till quite late showing guests around and showing how all the facilities work. In the morning he was up early making sure everyone was sorted. Overall great experience with the camp site, good facilities, hot water, fire pits, everything you could want and need.

Get set to see some of the Lake District’s most famed sights on outings from The Barn – it will take you about 10 minutes to drive to Wast Water, 20 minutes to the dramatic cascades of Stanley Ghyll waterfall or 40 minutes to Coniston Water for boat trips and sailing courses. If you’d like a little more of an uphill challenge, scramble up Sca Fell (15 minutes’ drive) or the slightly taller Scafell Pike (25 minutes). Alternatively, for a much gentler day out, sign up for llama or alpaca trekking at The Woolly Farm (five minutes). There’s plenty of heritage around here too: perhaps you’d like to mooch around Muncaster Castle (10 minutes) to see the haunted castle and hawk centre, or visit the atmospheric ruins of Egremont Castle (20 minutes). A ride on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (10 minutes) is a good way to mix up a bit of scenery and a sense of past times. Looking out towards the coast instead, you may like to head to the seaside at Seascale (15 minutes), where there’s a beach and a golf course.
