City break, rural rambles and seaside strolls all on your holiday game plan? Off to Yorkshire with you then, and a stay at Foxhill Park, just outside the village of Claxton and within easy reach of all of the above, thanks to a rather handy location close to the A64. From here it’s a 20-minute drive south to the fab historic attractions of York, or around half an hour north to the North York Moors for hiking, biking, horse riding and steam train rides. Add in a day or two by the coast (an hour’s drive away) and refresh with a brew in one of the local tea rooms and you’ll start to have an idea why the locals fondly refer to their region as ‘God’s own county’. Fancy leaving the car behind for the day? There’s a bus stop very nearby for trips to York or to the market town of Malton, and a golf course within walking distance. The woods and fields all around are great places to stride forth too, for dogs (and humanfolk) in need of walkies. No lengthy list of entertainment facilities here to distract from the chilled-out country vibe (this place thrives on peaceful times, not parties), but the essential amenities are all here and well-maintained: wifi access, a food shop and a smart modern toilet block with hot showers and accessible bathroom.

Em va agradar: I was greeted by a smiling lady in reception, who showed me a map of my pitch and explained where to connect the electricity. No stern face with a list of rules, like you get on some sites! The gent on the site appeared as I was setting up, to see if I needed anything, all very helpful, typical Yorkshire hospitality. I was fortunate with my pitch in the grass tent field: I was the only one there so had loads of space and privacy...the dog was in heaven:) Nice big "exercise field" for dogs and I suppose kids to play around in. A good amount of grass, that was well trimmed, to pitch the tent on. The facilities were very nice and well-maintained. A peaceful midweek break.

No em va agradar: If I had to put something it would be that the Wi-Fi doesn't reach the tent field. Not a huge problem and the host explained that they had only taken on the site in April and the Wi-Fi was amongst the things they aim to sort out.

Em va agradar: Flat pitch with fresh water close by. Toilet facilities cleaned regularly. Dog walking area is fantastic, a real asset.

No em va agradar: Cannot walk to a local shop, so make sure you have all the essentials with you.

Em va agradar: Foxhill is a lovely site. We actually bought our first caravan from someone sited at Foxhill and we were sited there for a year. We were surprised that the site has new owners and wardens. It’s still the high standard of site we remember though. Nice and peaceful, clean and nice shower blocks.

Em va agradar: Nice site. Good pitch sizes. Massive dog exercising field and a little grassed, woody path for them too. Lots of space for the kids to play. Close to York. Owners very friendly.

No em va agradar: Having to ask for toilet roll in the ladies to be topped up and running out of hand towels on the last morning. Not a dislike but a tip, the lower pitches on the rally field are on a slight slope so ensure you have something to level up your caravan.

A day trip to York is pretty much an essential – or, even better, several day trips. See the big sights (the minster, the timber-framed shops of the Shambles and the Jorvik Viking Centre), but also make time to visit the National Railway Museum, take a boat trip on the Ouse river and grab a cuppa and a fat rascal cake at the famed Betty’s tearoom. For a blast of sea air, head over to Bridlington, around an hour’s drive away, for a traditional British beach day out with promenade strolls, funfair rides and donkey rides – perhaps even a spot of paddling in the North Sea for the hardier types. Outdoorsy types should make a beeline for the North York Moors National Park, around half an hour away, for walking trails and traffic-free bike routes across one of the country’s largest expanses of heather moorland. Husky trekking, rafting and ziplining are among the other options for active souls; those who prefer a more leisurely pace may opt to see the landscape from the comfort of a heritage train ride.
