Would waking up and walking just a few feet for a spot of fishing be something of a holiday win for you? And how about finding that around 30 minutes by car from Warwick, Birmingham and Leicester? At Makins Lakes, in the village of Bramcote and 10 minutes’ drive from the Warwickshire town of Nuneaton, your pitch won’t just be close to a peaceful peg, you’ll also have a long list of Heart of England holiday highlights close by. Of course, the lakes on site aren’t just for the enjoyment of anglers. Being by the water brings a peaceful feel to all the pitches. There are views over the Warwickshire countryside too, but this isn’t a middle-of-nowhere kind of place. Each pitch is hooked up with electric and water access points. The shower and toilet block have accessible areas for disabled guests and there’s also a family-friendly parent and baby washroom. There’s an on-site café and bait shop and if you can’t bear to leave the lakeside, they’ll even deliver food out to you so you need not stop fishing all day. When you’re ready to rest your rod for a bit, it’s a 25-minute drive to catch a bit of culture in Coventry (UK City of Culture 2021) or 40 minutes to Stratford-upon-Avon, the must-see town for all things Shakespeare.

The fishing lakes are lovely to walk around - really nice setting
Pizza van Friday eve was brilliant
Love the fact they have now added the little shop in the reception area
Kids loved the goats and chickens

No em va agradar Could maybe do with some facilities on the non-electric camping field - bit of a walk to the toilets or washing up area, especially when carrying a big bowl of washing up

Shame the shop shuts at 5 and also the cafe closed at 2, would be nice to have the option for an early tea for the kids - but not the end of the world

Em va agradar The area is really nice and for a camping trip is good as there are lakes you can walk around and even fish on if you so choose.
The camping area is big so plenty of space and there is a nice set up area for touring vans too. There is a shower block and area at the side to wash utensils.
All in all a great place to camp out.

Em va agradar The site was very big, the lakes were beautiful especially when the sun was setting. The pitches were really big. Although it’s next to a busy road you can’t really hear it from the electric pitches. Many reviews say the toilets were bad but every time we used them they were exceptionally clean, the showers were very good and large.

No em va agradar Only thing i didn’t really like was the amount of geece poop, but i know that can’t really be helped, as well as the on site shop closing time, it closed quite early which was slightly unhelpful some nights.

Em va agradar Lovely walk around the lakes. Good pitches week served by ehu and water. Great price for the night. Washroom great during the day.

No em va agradar It noisy as close to motorway. Felt I was in a car park not much view other than the vans around me. Washroom got worse as the day went on. Toilet rolls stuffed down the toilets making only one usable during the evening. Probably caused by kids but not rectified by the site.

If you’re in the mood for a quiet picnic or woodland stroll, Coombe Abbey Country Park (15 minutes’ drive) is a 500-acre parkland made for whiling away a day outdoors. There’s also a play area, zip lining and climbing forest if the family’s up for an active day. Or you could always try out the angling here too if your break really is all about fishing. Entertaining the kids shouldn’t be too tricky around these parts either. Immerse yourself fully in the medieval world of dungeons, knights and princesses, jousting and falconry with a visit to Warwick Castle (35 minutes). Or scream if you wanna go faster at Drayton Manor Theme Park, home to rollercoasters, Thomas Land and a 15-acre zoo. Animal antics of all kinds are also order of the day at Twycross Zoo (30 minutes).
