Look forward to hiking and cycling on the Long Mynd plateau or exploring historic towns like Ludlow (20 minutes’ drive) when you book in at Mountain Edge Resort, a family-friendly site 10 minutes by car from Church Stretton in the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. The site’s wooden units provide simple, spacious and secure accommodation for up to five guests and their well-behaved dogs. Each pod is insulated with sheep’s wool and carpeted for extra warmth; they all have lighting, power sockets and a heater, but you will need to bring a bed, all bedding and towels with you. The private decking area outside allows you to catch the sun or store any sodden walking or cycling gear, and there are picnic tables for alfresco feasts. General site amenities include a modern shower block with disabled facilities and a washing-up area. The pub is open every day during summer peak season – it’s known for its delicious afternoon teas and Sunday carvery – and at the weekend during quieter times of year. There’s also a shop selling essentials so you won’t need to drive into Church Stretton if you leave something behind at home. If you’re travelling under pedal power, there’s secure bike storage and a family-run cycle shop with a fully equipped workshop and mountain bikes for hire.

Travel back in time to see Shire horses plough the fields and blacksmiths at work in the forge at Acton Scott Heritage Farm (five minutes’ drive), and say ‘hi’ to the woolly mammoth skeleton in Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, springboard to walks through hilly countryside. Close by is the photogenic half-timbered Stokesay Castle (both 10 minutes), open for tours of vast Elizabethan-era chambers with intricately vaulted wooden ceilings. Gorgeous Shrewsbury (35 minutes) has a spectacular blend of medieval, Tudor and Victorian architecture as well as a cathedral and an abbey to inspect. There are more timber-framed houses to be seen in lovely Ludlow (20 minutes) along with the Norman castle; the long-distance Mortimer Trail to the Welsh border at Kington starts/finishes at the castle walls. Closer to home base, walkers and cyclists can follow off-road trails over the heather-clad hills and dales of Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (10 minutes’ drive) in the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. For something a bit novel, go pony trekking (40 minutes), or see the countryside from above on gliding or paragliding adventures (both around 50 minutes away).

Em va agradar Very good site... but maybe for cyclists a small shelf with an electric kettle would help... and make clear the pod has abolutley no chairs (save for bench outside) or raised camp beds. Staff very friendly.

Em va agradar I booked Mountain Edge Pods for the bank holiday weekend and enjoyed the stay. The pods themselves were lovely and set in a nice forested area - the whole site is very well maintained. At night it was quiet and peaceful, which made it a really relaxing stay.

There are a couple of steps to get from the car park to the pods with all the camping stuff, but it wasn’t a big issue for us. Facilities were fine - just showers pretty basic, but okay for a one-night stay.

No em va agradar The pods could do with a little more privacy between them (no.1 and 2), especially when people are having BBQ, we felt bad as the all the smoke went directly to the couple's pod next to ours

The check-in process wasn't the best. Everything is handled at the busy restaurant by one person, which meant quite a long wait.

Em va agradar Excellent pods with good privacy. Plenty of outside space. Quiet. Really friendly, helpful staff. We bought the breakfast pack and it was amazing value - sausages, bacon, black pudding, eggs, tomatoes and mushrooms. There was enough food for both of us for three mornings! The people opposite got a BBQ pack and said that was excellent too.
