You'll sense the history all around you at The Old Vicarage, from the old house to the remains of the water mill in the river bed. Stays here are in the grounds of a 17th-century house in the village of Elkesley, six miles from Worksop and 25 miles from Nottingham. Its grounds run down to the banks of the Poulter river, and are lined with stands of acacia, sycamore, ash and oak trees which were originally donated to the first vicar by the Duke of Newcastle in the 1830s. There's plenty of space around the site for traditional outdoor activities, with a rope swing and stepping stones over the shallow river and a bridge that's perfect for playing Pooh Sticks. In the surrounding area there are animal parks and nature reserves to walk around, or to head back further in time, you could take one of the trails through ancient Sherwood Forest, around quarter of an hour's drive away. Every bank holiday, the site opens up their Cave Bar, a cool little space built into an exposure of 500-million-year-old sandstone, with a chillout room, TV room and games, plus an outdoor terrace for sipping drinks out in the sunshine. Other amenities include a washing-up area and bathrooms with plentiful hot showers, toilets and baby changing facilities.

Em va agradar: Not many…

No em va agradar: Don’t recommend! … When looking at this campsite on google it looks so pretty and a lovely sight, till you arrive and its water logged/ run down and unclean! • Toilets didn’t get clean the whole time we was there (2 nights) mud and grass everywhere and covered in cobwebs • Where the washing up station was there was 2 bin bags full of garbage just left on the floor and the bin was also full that never got emptied. • Dog poo bins full also never got emptied • There was a massive tent at the back they used for weddings but there was rubbish/ building materials just chucked around it. • Also there was massive pile of rubbish at the bottom of the car park, old mattress/ lawn mowers/ doors/ literally everything! • We could only put our tent in 1 place due to everything being water logged and super muddy! And had to walk through the mud to get to anywhere on the campsite

Del gerent: Hi Georgia Many thanks for uploading the photos, as you will see those bollards are up to protect the grass from getting churned up like it did at the weekend!! The toilets were cleaned daily - we ask that you leave the toilets as you expect to find them! The rubbish should be put in the skip - as told when you check in The Tipi company have been on and off site since last Thursday making this perfect for our upcoming brides and grooms and unfortunately they need to leave equipment here sometimes and it cannot be done all from the inside so the outside on the grass needs to be used! The Lawn mowers were not left out - these are an expensive piece of equipment so these will have been put away!! The doors are stored in our caves - if people have got these out, even though they shouldn't have, then that is not our fault? 1 place to pitch your tent on 5 acres of land? We have had a busy weekend with 25+ pitches so we find this hard to believe. We have had dry weather since Saturday! If you had a problem you should have come to us to voice your opinion instead of plastering it all over our reviews? Regards The Old Vicarage Team

Em va agradar: The site was lovely, felt very safe. Staff very freindly and approachable Clean toilet cubicle.

Caseta Luxury 1 habitació

Em va agradar: Reception really friendly and helpful. Great lodge with all comforts. Large bathroom and comfy bedroom. Well equipped with cooking utensils. The grounds are lovely with beautiful stream. It was a really happy site with everyone enjoying their weekend break. Brilliant for children to have fun.

Em va agradar: Lovely quiet, picturesque site. Kids loved the play area and playing in the river. The bar being open was an unexpected positive addition.

No em va agradar: Toilet block was a bit basic but from other reviews and comments, can see a new block is due to be added. Noise from A1 noticeable during the night, but we were on the closest spot to the driveway so maybe not so bad on rest of the site.

Llocs d'interès

The surrounding countryside has great places for walks and wildlife-spotting, with trails around the lakes and wetlands of Idle Valley Nature Reserve (15 minutes' drive) and lakes for fishing too. Then there's Sherwood Forest, 25 minutes away: some 450 acres of wildlife among ancient oak trees, alongside a wealth of biking and walking trails to take you through them. Adventure seekers can see it all from the treetops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, and the kids can clamber about at Robin Hood’s Hideout, an acclaimed natural play area. For family antics out of the forest, Sundown Adventure Park (20 minutes) has rides and themed playgrounds for the under-10s and families can also make tracks for Ferry Farm Country Park (45 minutes), to feed lambs, meet pigs and zoom about on go-karts and the adventure playground. An hour away and a major hub since Robin Hood's days, Nottingham still draws the crowds. Tour the castle and the caves, stop for a snifter in Ye Trip To Jerusalem (oldest pub in England, perhaps...), skate on ice at Motorpoint Arena and see what law and order meant in the Sheriff’s days at the National Justice Museum. For further historical wanderings, Creswell Crags presents an array of prehistoric caves in a cracking limestone gorge and Newark's castle, Air Museum and National Civil War Centre sum up the centuries very entertainingly, all around half an hour away.
