Grab the dog (if you've got one – no need to acquire one specially) and head to Cresslands Touring Park in South Lincolnshire for woodland walks and lazy days near the River Glen. A good base for exploring the surroundings and enjoying a bit of outdoor time, the park is five minutes from a peaceful woodland, for long walks and spotting wildlife (including the kingfishers which live along this stretch of the glen). Guests can also head to the nearby river for walks, or take bikes out onto quiet countryside lanes. Not got a mutt? The site's also welcoming to cats, rabbits… even kids. Whoever's in your party, head to the opposite riverbank for a popular walking spot leading to the nature reserve along the Macmillan Way, a long-distance footpath linking Boston in Lincolnshire to Abbotsbury in Dorset. After all that fresh air you won’t have to venture far for a drink and a bite to eat – Waterside Garden Centre is 500 metres away with a restaurant, and there are a few pubs around a mile away if you fancy some pub grub. Cresslands is four miles south of Bourne, which has a greater selection of eateries, and the historic town of Stamford, with its attractions such as the famed Burghley House and Park and open-air theatre, is about a 25-minute drive. Bathroom facilities on site include two showers, two toilets and two wash basins with instant hot water and nifty extras including shaver ports and hand dryers. Two washing-up sinks and a washing machine are also available.

Em va agradar: Very clean site, plenty of space. Very welcoming owner and good facilities. A nice pub within walking distance and a couple of nice dog walks close by. Great weekend stop - or a stopover for a longer journey. From the hubbies point of view he said nice flat pitch lol.

No em va agradar: Nothing. I read some comments about the road noise but it really was only at rush hour. I don’t live close to a road so should notice it more than most but I really didn’t.

Em va agradar: Friendly and accommodating owner called David who made us feel very welcome. Well maintained site with great pitches. Close to local amenities and a bus stop a few minutes walk away. Pristine amenities. Set on the bank a small river where you can watch the wildlife (including kingfishers). Lovely riverside walk.

Em va agradar: Site is very well kept and has spacious pitches which are all fully serviced. David the site owner made us extremely welcome, showed us personally to our pitch and was always available for any problems. Toilet and shower amenities were always spotless. The site is very secure with coded access barrier and gates that were locked of a night time.

No em va agradar: The traffic noise is sometimes noticeable and may be a problem for light sleepers, but was not a problem for us.

Em va agradar: Lovely clean site, facilities are fantastic, nestled in the countryside. It was idyllic. We would give the site 10 out of 10, it’s spectacular so much thought has gone into the creation of this site. We would definitely come back again and recommend wholeheartedly to other people.

Em va agradar: what a great little site! A very heartly Welcome by the owner, Spacious full service pitches And a peaceful and environment. Sadly, I booked only for one day, but I will definitely return. The toilets and showers are perfect!

Em va agradar: Brilliant site perfectly set between Bourne and Stamford. We had the grass pitch with electric hook-up and absolutely loved it - the pitch was spacious, quiet and close to all facilities. Toilets and showers were spotless and David couldn't do enough for us upon arrival and throughout our stay. The bus (101) takes you into Bourne, from there catch the 201 into Stamford - or you can walk up to Baston around the back of the site where there's a lovely pub called The White Horse. It was perfect for a few days and we'll definitely look to re-book!

No em va agradar: Nothing, no faults whatsoever. Other reviews mentioned noise from the road - and while it is a busy road I wouldn't say it was overly noisy from the pitches. No wifi, but don't want to deduct a star as unfair. Signal (both EE and Tesco) worked perfectly with 4/5G.

Em va agradar: Pitches are nice and private as they are separated by hedges. Toilet block is small but very clean. Nice welcome by the owner. Good value pitches.

No em va agradar: Too close to the A15 so traffic noise is constant even during the night so not so good if you are a light sleeper.

Visit Burghley House and Park, a 16th-century country house near Stamford (25 minutes by car), built for Elizabeth I's lucky Lord High Treasurer Lord Burghley. Sights to see include the Great Hall with hammer beam roof, collections of 17th-century Italian paintings, the gorgeous Heaven Room painted by Verrio, and the gardens packed with sculptures, flowers and plants. While in Stamford, pay visits to All Saints Church and the Stamford Arts Centre, home to art galleries and the tourist info centre. You might also stroll around the Stamford meadows for birdwatching or a picnic on the banks of the Welland. Another option in town is All Saints Brewery, for guided tours of the microbrewery and tastings of its specialised fruit beers. For folk seeking a slice of city life, Peterborough is a 25-minute drive away.
