Close to bakewell, buxton, chatsworth house and dovedale

Off to Derbyshire for trips to Buxton, Bakewell and beyond? The Bull i' th' Thorn is located just off the A515, making it a doddle to zip from one end of the Peaks to the other and be back in time for tea. This peaceful park is set deep in the Peak District and comes with the sweeping views to prove it. The friendly site managers are keen to point out that muddy boots are welcome at this outdoorsy spot – handy indeed given that the car-free Tissington Trail is opposite the site. After days packed with outdoor exploring, you’ll likely appreciate The Bull i' th' Thorn's hot showers (a separate shower room is available for families travelling with young kids). There are also three water points and an outdoor washing-up area for self-catering sorts. There is a pub on site, which has a pizzeria and a large-screen TV to broadcast major sporting events. Open between Wednesday and Sunday, it serves food between 12pm and 8pm on Wednesdays through to Friday, at between 8.30am and 8pm on Saturday and between 8.30am and 4pm on Sunday (although note that the site isn't serving breakfast during the winter period until easter, and during high season, breakfasts are served only weekends only and stops at 11am). Three other pubs are handily within walking distance for days when you'd like to eat out, with the nearest less than a mile away. The site is also a few minutes’ stroll from Tagg Lane Dairy, a family-run gelateria that uses raw milk straight from their pampered Jersey dairy herd. The site has unisex toilets and showers; extra toilets are available in the pub when it's open.

Em va agradar: Electric pitches and washing facilities where excellent. Reasonably priced.

No em va agradar: Showers were poorly installed so you had to leane over the tap to get under the water as the Showers where low powered wich normally isent a problem but due to being tall and the odd way the taps where installed made it awkward to shower. Also the shower block didn't have any curtains inside the stalls to prevent cloths/towls from getting wet from the showe or flour guard not block to prevent the same for shoes not a problem in single sex showers block only an issue in these unisex ones.

Em va agradar: The pub was lovely and close, served good food. The campsite had electric hookup in some places. The site was quite small so to toilets where nice and close, facilities where clean but could do with updating like it's sister campsite the royal oak. Not a disabled friendly campsite. Fire pits are aloud and you can buy logs and hire the pit there. Free WiFi on site

Em va agradar: Convenient location for ease of travel to tourist spots and hiking routes The one time we met a member of staff they were helpful and informative, however we only saw him once in 4-5 days

No em va agradar: Near A515, almost constant 24hr noise Next to donkey sanctuary, noise issues again Very limited on site facilities, no where near enough toilets/showers/washing areas for the total number of pitches, fortunately it was quiet during our visit, definately not somewhere i would go if busy On site restaurant difficult to book, but only open half the week?? Wifi didnt reach our pitch, which wasn't that far compared to other pitches No onsite or nearby shops for basic food

Em va agradar: Clean toilets and showers, good size pitches with a fantastic view. The playground is great and the pizza was delicious. All together a well put together and convenient site. The staff were really helpful, attentive and knowledgeable- even offering to help put up the tent! Would 100% reccommend this site to families with small kids.

No em va agradar: As the site is at the top of a hill it can be quite windy, we would take a windbreak next time.

Em va agradar: Overall I think this was the best campsite I’ve stayed on, toilets showers clean and well maintained water was hot, kitchen wash areas with hot water perfect, we had electric pitch which was great size for my 12 man air tent, beautiful views and the staff we great, pub staff very inviting and help me look for my son when he decided to wonder off with my dog around then camp when dark, we had a pleasant stay and will definitely come again next year.

Em va agradar: Very quiet, relaxed and good facilities. There was wifi but pretty faint however we were not expecting it so it was a bonus. 30 minutes from Matlock where our activities were located. Food in the pub was great but there was a really long wait after being sat down and was tough to keep the kids entertained. Overall, we liked the stay and will re book next year.

No em va agradar: Shower strength in some of the showers was frustratingly weak and ran hot to cold too. Lots of bugs attracted to the lights..appreciate this is nature but maybe doors on a hinges would help as most were left open.

Llocs d'interès

This countrified site is close to beauty spots like Dovedale (20 minutes' drive), where you can stroll along the water's edge and picnic by the far-farmed stepping stones. For a more adventurous (and hillier) trek on foot, pick up the nearby Limestone Way in Monyash (five minutes). Looking for cycle hire? Head to Parsley Hay (five minutes) to hire bikes (including accessible models) and tandems. This is where the High Peak and Tissington trails meet (both run along flat former railway lines, so there's little chance you'll run out of puff). Chatsworth House (20 minutes) has grand gardens and elegant interiors to admire (there's also a guinea pig village that's likely to revive any tiddlers suffering from museum fatigue). Buxton (15 minutes) is a spa town of similarly posh repute and is full of boutique shops, ornate terraces and cultural sites (it also plays host to the Buxton Festival throughout the month of July). It's also home to two popular golf courses (the Cavendish Golf Club for hot shots and Peak Practice Golf for newbies).
