General

  • Spacious semi-rural site 10 minutes' drive from Mansfield
  • Less than half an hour's drive from Sherwood Forest and Clumber Park
  • Well-stocked carp fishing lake next to the site

Packing list for folks heading to Tall Trees Touring Park: comfy shoes, fishing kit, bus pass, kids, dogs (these last two only if you already have them – no need to acquire them specially).

This family-friendly and dog-welcoming park is in a semi-rural spot a 10-minute drive from the centre of Mansfield, ticking holiday boxes for easy access to both urban amenities and fresh-air attractions. The comfy shoes and/or bus pass are useful things to have with you as there’s a bus stop just outside the park for forays into town, and lots of useful bits and bobs within walking distance (a family-friendly pub, fast food outlets, supermarket and indoor play centre among them).

Those shoes may well also come in handy for lengthy rural rambles in the local area: around Sherwood Forest or Clumber Park, perhaps, or taking in the historic buildings of Hardwick Hall or Newstead Abbey. And the fishing kit? That’s for those who fancy heading to the lake just by the park for some quiet time gazing out over the Maun Valley Nature Reserve and (hopefully) catching some carp.

Facilities on site include a playground to keep the kids amused (and/or tire them out), a small library, tourist information point and well-kept toilet block with accessible facilities and baby changing.

Left site a day early as someone had syphoned diesel from my husbands car.
No where to walk my dog
Had to have her on a lead even as she was stood at the Caravan door

From the manager...

Hi!
We are sorry to hear about the problems you appeared to have whilst staying on our site. The issue with the dog. It is company policy to have dogs on leads at all times. It does state this on the Park Rules as you drive through the barrier. It is also mentioned on the leaflet given when you book in.

Our concern that you mention fuel taken from your car? No mention of this incident was reported to us whilst you were here. Had you mentioned it, we could easily check our CCTV footage. I believe you were not to far from the camera. If you could contact us to inform what day you believed this happened. We will check them and see if we can help you to identify who has done this. This is an extremely unusual event. This I believe is the first time it has happened. Please contact us.

Has the potential to be a lovely site. Good location, nice spacious pitches.

    Disliked:

Entrance road full of bumps and extreme speed ramps. Bad enough for car, let alone towing caravan.
Advertises free WiFi, but not actually available. Kept coming up “wrong password”. Have to knock on wardens home door if problems, and made to feel as if you’re interrupting her. Her helpfulness was to state that “they only had one password, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, and everyone has the same problem”.
Shower block contains one male shower and two female showers for whole site, cleaned at 8am only. A lot of seasonal pitches were taken by local workers.
Dog walking area is a joke, ended up just walking round site.

From the manager...

Hi Kevin

We are sorry that you appeared to be unhappy with your stay. We are constantly maintaining the entrance to our site. The speed bumps are in place to slow people down. It is a traffic calming measure. The bumps are to regulations. We are having problems with the WiFi! Yes the password appears to be showing incorrect at times. But as mentioned it is something we are looking into. You mention the shower block only having certain facilities. I can assure you they are in line with the caravan & local council rules. Therefore we do have the correct facilities. As most sites when it is busy, it does mean you may have to wait a little longer. The showers are not and have not been cleaned at 08:00. We always clean them a little later ie: 08:30 onward. However if you needed to use the showers we would have given you an alternative had you asked. We do have a male cleaning the men's when it is busy. They are cleaned at least twice a day, and checked through out. We do pride ourselves on our facilities. Had you raised other issues whilst on site, they would have been explained to you.

Local attractions

Take a spot at Tall Trees for all sorts of leisurely local walks: stride around Robin Hood’s old stomping ground, 450-acre Sherwood Forest, or take in one of the trails through the woods and around the lake at National Trust-owned Clumber Park (bike hire can be had here if you prefer to pedal). Both are less than half an hour’s drive from the park.

Creswell Crags, 20 minutes’ drive away, is an enclosed limestone gorge and cave system that’s home to the UK’s only known Ice Age cave art. There’s a great museum here, and rock art cave tours can be had in the spring and summer months.

If it’s historic buildings you’re after, head to 16th-century Hardwick Hall, or to medieval Newstead Abbey (home to a collection of objects belonging to former resident Lord Byron). Rufford Abbey Country Park is a good place for woodland walks around the abbey ruins.
