A gorgeous waterside location, with easy access to swimming, fishing and canoeing… and you get to contribute to a good cause too? It’s a winning situation all round at Spruill Conservation Farm, in a fabulous North Carolina location on the banks of Albemarle Sound.
This spacious property was owned by the Spruill family for over a hundred years before becoming conservation easement protected land in late 2023. The farm maintains 65 acres of active commercial farming, while also dedicating itself to environmental research, ecological education and developing sustainable practices. As well as farm fields, in the property are swamp areas, a hardwood forest, a vegetable garden and a huge fig orchard.
And of course, the highlight for many visitors is the shoreline of the Albemarle Sound. There’s a swimming beach area for guests, and the farm has a small number of kayaks and a foot pedal boat for those who'd like to get out onto the water. Each of the spacious, secluded pitches has direct access to the water for days of fishing, swims or just enjoying the spectacular sunsets.
You don't have to wait for sunset to find fabulous views around here though – there’s a lot to see during the day as you look out for otters and birds including ospreys and bald eagles. And the remote setting also means you’re likely to get some amazing stargazing too.
Please remember that this is a nature reserve so you’ll be asked to follow several rules like not using speakers or fireworks. Facilities are simple, being limited to just picnic tables and portable toilets, so you'll need to pack everything you need. Supplies are available in Roper, 10 minutes' drive away.

Fishing, watersports and swimming are great ways to enjoy some outdoor time here, and there are also a couple of lovely walking trails around the site – try the Perimeter Trail or the Bobby Wilkins shoreline trail for a real in-depth explore of your surroundings.
Beyond that, there are more trails to explore around Phelps Lake (25 minutes' drive), in Merchants Millpond State Park (55 minutes) or along the Atlantic shoreline from Nags Head (an hour). Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge (25 minutes) is another great option, with an arts centre and the red wolf conservation centre.
To learn a bit about the area's past, visit the Washington County African-American Museum and Cultural Center (10 minutes), Somerset Place State Historic Site (25 minutes), Historic Hope plantation (35 minutes) or cross the Sound to visit the historic town of Edenton (20 minutes). All the trails at Spruill Farm are named in honour of the African-Americans who worked on the farm over the years.
