Exploring the local landscape by bike is particularly rewarding in this agricultural part of the Med. You stand to see up to 50 varieties of vegetables growing in the surrounding fields as you make for the nearest beaches (or, for a proper calf workout, as you pedal down into the city centre along traffic-free paths). Need inspiration? Tourist information for cyclists is supplied at reception. Valencia (20 minutes' drive/half an hour on the metro) isn't short of state of the art modern buildings – the sleek curves of the City of the Arts and Sciences and Oceanogràfic aquarium are among the most recognisable architectural silhouettes in Spain. There are also plenty of sights for those that prefer their buildings on the traditional side, including the city's 19th-century covered market, 13th-century cathedral and 15th-century silk exchange known as the Lonja de la Seda. Valencia isn't a smoggy city, but if you want some proper fresh country air you'll appreciate a change of scene in the mountainous Serra Calderona Natural Park (45 minutes), the Marjal dels Moros wetlands (25 minutes) or the spectacular Salto de la Novia waterfall (45 minutes).
