Spectacular views of volcanic Alta Garrotxa peaks are yours for the taking at family-run Can Banal, five minutes’ drive from the historic village of Montagut in the Catalonia hills. And what's at ground level is just as good: spacious, partially shaded grass pitches on this family-friendly, eco-conscious site are tucked under trees and surrounded by lush vegetation. The lack of light pollution at this rural spot also means you may well be treated to some excellent stargazing too. All of that makes this a splendid spot for a chilled-out break, but if you're in the market for more activity you'll be pleased to hear there are numerous biking and hiking trails (some of which are suitable for families) that can be easily accessed from the pitches. If you’d rather strike a balance by staying active but not moving off site, that's possible too as there’s a small swimming pool and a recreation ground with table tennis, table football, a trampoline and a play area. And don't forget the cuddly donkeys who love to be fussed (and fed). Organised fun includes bingo games and team sports, and when it’s time for family downtime you can borrow books and games from reception. Camping basics are sold on site, but not food supplies (other than the pre-booked bread delivery service in high season). Local produce is whipped up into regional dishes at the evening buffet from mid-July to mid-August; please book in advance to prevent food waste. There are occasional jam sessions next to the bar too (but nothing beyond midnight please, so your fellow guests can get some sleep).

You can reach the site using TEISA buses from Barcelona or Girona. The bus stop is 3 km from the village of Montagut, at a roundabout called 'la Cruïlla o el Trencat de Montagut'. This stop is not shown on bus timetables; instead, search for: Castellfollit de la Roca. When purchasing your ticket, it's important to tell (and then remind) the driver that you'll be getting off at the Cruïlla/Trencat de Montagut. From there you can reach the site by taxi (pre-booked only).

Once you’ve seen the volcanic peaks from your pitch, you’ll no doubt be keen to get out and explore – and there’s certainly plenty to see, with more than 40 volcanic cones and 20 lava flows in La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park (10 minutes’ drive). There are several marked walking and bike trails, and activity providers in Olot (20 minutes) can sort you out with guided hikes, canyoning and via ferrata climbing outings. While you’re in Olot (the ‘city of volcanoes'), check out the Espai Cràter science museum for interactive exhibits on the geology of volcanoes. Riverside Besalú (15 minutes) is another local town that’s worth visiting; you could also head to villages like Castellfollit de la Roca (15 minutes) and Santa Pau (half an hour) or plan a day trip to the historic attractions of Girona (50 minutes). For a kid-friendly day out, try Lava Parc (25 minutes), which has pony rides, laser tag and a farm area as well as mini train rides through the forest.
