When you’re roaming the globe, there’s little to beat a warm welcome when you arrive at your place of rest. So it’s mighty heartening to hear about this from previous guests re the splendidly friendly staff at Camping El Helguero. And it’s no surprise to find cheery folk working at this site, given its splendid setting surrounded by peaceful forest and a 10-minute drive from the seaside town of Comillas for beach times and bars… All around this locale are little villages, with traditional restaurants and tapas bars to sustain weary walkers (or drivers, for that matter) and you’re within easy striking distance of gorgeous sandy beaches too. Santander is an easy 40-minute drive away. A packed entertainment programme runs in summer, with all manner of activities including kids’ games, magic shows and crafts, live music evenings and theme nights (complete with enthusiastic dressing up). For a gentler vibe, amble over to the outdoor pool for a swim or to stretch out on the grass sun terrace (with shaded spots for the fair of face). There’s a paddling pool and a playground for tiddlers too. Eats and drinks are easily sorted at El Helguero – either fire up a barbie and cook up your own nosh, using provisions from the well-stocked mini market, or bag a table at the restaurant for drinks, snacks and meals. The outdoor terrace is the place to be on warm days, unless of course there’s a big sporting event on, in which case you just might want to wander inside and follow proceedings on the TV.

Strike out directly from the site by foot or bike to one of the nearby beaches, or in search of a feed in a local village, or drive for 15 minutes to the coastal Oyambre Natural Park. Something a bit more strenuous? The foothills of the Picos de Europa are an hour away, to hike through the forests and take in fabulous views of the peaks (perhaps stopping to cool your feet in a mountain stream along the way). Comillas, a 10-minute drive from the site, has a smashing sandy beach (with shallow calm waters for swimming), as well as horse riding and paragliding centres if you want to get a bit more active. Wannabe surfers can sign up for lessons in San Vicente de la Barquera, 20 minutes away, while golfers can play against a seaside backdrop by Oyambre beach,15 minutes from the site.

喜欢: Facilities were clean and up to date with hot water, good sized pitches. On site restaurant, a couple of miles from Comillas

不喜欢: Pitches very muddy when it rained, also conkers hit the roof of our van (autumn) so be careful where you pitch, the first electric point didn’t work so we had to move pitch, but good after that

喜欢: This is a well organised campsite in a lovely setting. We particularly enjoyed the swimming pools but also it's proximity to local beaches and beautiful coastline. We found the restaurant was very good too.

喜欢: Coqueto camping, tranquilo con parcelas bien grandes en plena naturaleza.
Genial las piscinas y el restaurante recomendado, tanto en calidad precio como personal.

不喜欢: Depende de momentos los baños se quedan pequeños (salida en el mes de julio).
