Camping El Helguero: The swimming pool

General

  • Friendly rural site 10 minutes' drive from Comillas
  • A 40-minute drive from the city and ferry port of Santander
  • Pool, playground, restaurant and family summer entertainment programme

When you’re roaming the globe, there’s little to beat a warm welcome when you arrive at your place of rest. So it’s mighty heartening to hear about this from previous guests re the splendidly friendly staff at Camping El Helguero.

And it’s no surprise to find cheery folk working at this site, given its splendid setting surrounded by peaceful forest and a 10-minute drive from the seaside town of Comillas for beach times and bars... All around this locale are little villages, with traditional restaurants and tapas bars to sustain weary walkers (or drivers, for that matter) and you’re within easy striking distance of gorgeous sandy beaches too. Santander is an easy 40-minute drive away.

A packed entertainment programme runs in summer, with all manner of activities including kids’ games, magic shows and crafts, live music evenings and theme nights (complete with enthusiastic dressing up). For a gentler vibe, amble over to the outdoor pool for a swim or to stretch out on the grass sun terrace (with shaded spots for the fair of face). There’s a paddling pool and a playground for tiddler too.

Eats and drinks are easily sorted at El Helguero – either fire up a barbie and cook up your own nosh, using provisions from the well-stocked mini market, or bag a table at the restaurant for drinks, snacks and meals. The outdoor terrace is the place to be on warm days, unless of course there’s a big sporting event on, in which case you just might want to wander inside and follow proceedings on the TV.

Please note

Entertainment and activities are available between 10/07 and 23/08.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/04 and 29/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Lovely site, shady and sunny pitches. We were given a choice, and it looked as though everyone else arriving after us was too. Our wash/shower room was very dated but very clean: there was a more modern one at the other end of the site. Lots of hot water. Very friendly and helpful reception staff. Wifi good, swimming pool looked good too although we hadn't used it.

    Disliked:

Rude bar and shop staff. Shop staff ignored a "Good morning" even in their own language, and man behind the bar couldn't be bothered to speak at all. When he wanted 1 Euro for a baguette he just stuck up 1 finger. We didn't use the bar or shop again, so we bought our supplies from Comillas, the local town.

The lovely, quiet shaded area away from the hustle and bustle, to pitch our tent. The clean facilities and powerful showers were great. The staff were very friendly and helpful and let us charge our phones and freeze our ice blocks in the office- thank you very much! The pool area is great and fun for children of all ages including 30yr old children! We had a lovely time and would definitely come back!!

    Disliked:

The shower cubicles could have done with a ledge or seat of sorts to help dry feet etc- but not a big issue!
We went into town for dinner and came back after 12. We knew we wouldn’t be able to drive into campsite at that time- but struggled parking the car outside for the night- as not much space.

The touring pitches were tidy and out of the way. The shower block was functional and very clean. The site worked for us but the long term caravan site area resembled s shanty town and first appearances were disappointing

Close the sea and beautiful towns and countryside. Less than an hour from Santander, so convenient for ferries. Plenty of room when we stayed. Shower blocks clean, and everything worked. Bar and restaurant on the site.
