General

  • Friendly rural site 10 minutes' drive from Comillas
  • 40 minutes' drive from the city and ferry port of Santander
  • Pool, playground, restaurant and family summer entertainment programme

When you’re roaming the globe, there’s little to beat a warm welcome when you arrive at your place of rest. So it’s mighty heartening to hear about this from previous guests re the splendidly friendly staff at Camping El Helguero.

And it’s no surprise to find cheery folks working at this site, given its splendid setting surrounded by peaceful forest and a 10-minute drive from the seaside town of Comillas for beach times and bars. All around this locale are little villages, with traditional restaurants and tapas bars to sustain weary walkers (or drivers, for that matter) and you’re within easy striking distance of gorgeous sandy beaches too. Santander is an easy 40-minute drive away.

A packed entertainment programme runs in summer, with all manner of activities including kids’ games, magic shows and crafts, live music evenings and theme nights (complete with enthusiastic dressing up). For a gentler vibe, amble over to the outdoor pool for a gentle or to stretch out on the grass sun terrace (with shaded spots for the fair of face). There’s a paddling pool for tiddlers, or they can trot to the playground for fun times on land.

Eats and drinks are easily sorted at El Helguero – either fire up a barbie and cook up your own nosh, using provisions from the well-stocked mini market, or bag a table at the restaurant for drinks, snacks and meals. The outdoor terrace is the place to be on warm days, unless of course there’s a big sporting event on, in which case you just might want to wander inside and follow proceedings on the TV.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/04 and 29/09 (subject to weather conditions).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

We really enjoyed our stay and found the site friendly and clean. We were very fortunate to have a large pitch that overlooked the site. Some camping areas seemed a little cramped but everyone seemed happy and got on with it.

Used as a nightstop after arriving on the Santander ferry. ... 05/12/2018

Used as a nightstop after arriving on the Santander ferry. Took about 40 minutes. Nice quiet site. English spoken. No problem that we were arriving late ( just before 2100) from the ferry - We just emailed in advance. Toilets etc all nice and clean, as was chemical waste point. 3G signal very good - especially as the site seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. Would definitely use again.

    Disliked:

We turned off the motorway just before Torelavega on the CA131 as suggested by Satnav, thinking it was avoiding narrow roads. Don’t do this, the road is very slow and winding. Stay on the A8 until much later - I can’t remember the exact road, but we went back that way and it was much quicker. (I spoke to another Brit who'd just come from the ferry and he told me that he phoned the site up beforehand and was told him the best roads to use to get there.)
