Forest forays in the north-east Netherlands… among the mountain bike and cycling of the country's Drenthe province and its hundreds of kilometres of trails? If this sounds tiptop, book a break at De Lente van Drenthe.
This family-friendly countryside site is three kilometres from the town of Gasselte, on the edge of the Gieten-Borger forest and its several walking and mountain bike trails. A lake with a beach and a swimming area is a short walk away too; golf, an amusement park, and a national park with more walking and cycle trails are also nearby.
Guided walks, crafts, shows and games for kids are among the activities arranged at De Lente van Drenthe in summer by the recreation team. There's a heated outdoor pool on site too, and a paddling pool, playground, pétanque court, tennis court, football pitch and games room.
In 2018, the clever folks here installed a fab new addition to proceedings: the largest waterpark in the Netherlands, no less. Settle in on site for three nights or more (always a good plan) and you'll be rewarded with free access to the waterpark along with all the other fun bits to do.
Amenities include a launderette, washing-up area and heated washrooms with toilets, showers and baby bathroom.

The Drenthe province is the best known in the Netherlands for its cycling options and hundreds of kilometres of trails through towns and villages, canals, forest and heath. If you’re after more kid-friendly ways to see the surrounds, head to Outdoor Center Boomkroonpad (four kilometres away) for a woodland playground, a viewing tower and a trail through the treetops.
It's only a few kilometres from the site to the Drouwenerzand amusement park and its rides, rollercoasters, trampolines and loads of indoor play. Options a little further away include the Joytime climbing park (nine kilometres), meeting the beasts at Wildlands adventure zoo (26 kilometres) and speedy days at the Assen TT Circuit (30 kilometres).
For something a little more laidback, head for the history-themed activities at the Hunebedden Centrum in Borger (nine kilometres) or remind the kids of the need for good behaviour at the National Prison Museum (40 kilometres).
