The town has plenty of shops and restaurants to visit, but those looking for proper retail therapy should head to Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet (half an hour). Further afield, many guests like to linger in beauty spots such as Kuinre (10 minutes' drive), the coastal village of Urk (20 minutes) or explore the canals and waterways of Giethoorn ('The Venice of the North') aboard a rented boat or barge (half an hour). Other splendid local villages include Blokzijl (20 minutes), a hub for watersports, and Vollenhove (20 minutes) with its tumbledown castle ruins. Green-fingered visitors may well appreciate the delicate floral specimens on show at the local orchid farm (10 minutes), while hardy outdoorsy types will doubtless want to make their way to De Weerribben-Wieden National Park (20 minutes). The latter is the largest fen in Europe, so guests have room to roam for as long as they please.
