Want to be completely surrounded by gorgeous greenery during your Umbria break, but also well connected so you can get out and explore easily? Sounds like you need to take a look at Umbria Verde, a quiet spot in the grounds of a detached country house that also happens to be just a few minutes’ drive from the E45. That makes this site a great option for a stopover on a long cross-country journey or for a longer break spent exploring this attractive area. Mountain bikes are available for excursions into the nearby mountains, there are plenty of walking trails around and it’s a short drive to popular tourist spots like Spoleto and Assisi or more local towns like Todi and Terni. Waterfalls, vineyards and historic sights are also scattered around the area, so you should never be short of something to do. Back on site, there are all sorts of handy facilities including toilets, showers, wifi, a barbecue area and a shared fridge and freezer. Guests are also welcome to use the house’s relaxation area, which has a private bathroom, fitness room and table tennis as well as indoor and outdoor fireplaces. As for local amenities, there’s a village bar 20 minutes’ walk away and Acquasparta (five minutes’ drive) has shops and places to eat.

There are lots of lovely trails to wander in the area around the site – but if there’s one not to be missed, it’s surely the one at Marmore Falls (35 minutes’ drive), the tallest man-made waterfall in the world. It’s a pretty spectacular sight and an engineering marvel – just make sure you time your trip to coincide with one of the scheduled water releases. Also close by for easy visits are the remains of a Roman city at Carsulae archaeological site (15 minutes) and the exotic animals that live at Leo Wild Park (20 minutes). Or how about spending some time strolling around nearby towns? You might like to see what you can find in less well-known places like Todi (20 minutes) and Terni (25 minutes) or head to popular locations like Spoleto (35 minutes) and Perugia (45 minutes). A drive of an hour or so can also get you to either the stunning UNESCO-listed Assisi or the gorgeous medieval Orvieto – also a wine-making hub.
