Sporting activities on the tree-lined Hohensaaten-Friedrichsthaler Canal can be accessed right from the pitches; it’s a quiet spot for wild swimming, paddleboarding and fishing. You can also hire motor boats (35 minutes’ drive) on the Oder River to explore the Uckermark’s waterways and reclaimed polders. Cycle and hiking paths run straight from the campsite along the canal into the marshy meadowlands of Unteres Odertal National Park (15 minutes) – great for family jaunts as the terrain is nice and flat. Another wonderful spot for younger kids is Tierpark Angermünde (half an hour) petting zoo, where they can feed goats, deer and donkeys. Over in Poland, Bukowa Forest Landscape Park (45 minutes) is a peaceful haven for walks in beech woodland, and the landmark Widuchowa Observation Point (35 minutes) has stunning views over watery landscaped on both sides of the border. If you’re due an injection of culture into your Polish foray, tour the museums, World War II tunnels and underground Cold War bunkers in Szczecin (50 minutes), and make a night of it with an opera or symphony performance.
