Ever been tempted to jack it all in and run away to join the circus? Well now you can – for a little while, at least. Esprit de Cirque, five minutes’ drive from the Provençal village of Néuoles, is a small motorhome site where you’ll be staying right there at the circus location among the big tops, the acrobats and the equestrian performers.
How you choose to be part of this is up to you – the team runs circus skills training ranging from beginner courses to professional qualifications, covering juggling, acrobatics and aerial skills among other things. They also have family-friendly sessions on selected weekends and in the school holidays with fun activities for all ages.
Even if you’re not up for climbing up on the trapeze, by staying here you’ll be supporting a really special enterprise – and you may also be able to catch a show to see the professionals doing their thing.
Aside from all the circus goings-on, this site is in a great location for exploring the Provence Verte area – there are lots of walks and outdoor activities nearby, and places like Toulon and Aix-en-Provence are within easy reach.
It’s a welcoming and family-friendly location with pitches sheltered by pine trees and looking out over vineyards and olive groves. Facilities stretch to water, electric hook-ups and communal toilets, but everything else you’ll need to provide yourself. There is a large supermarket for restocking supplies in Gareoult (10 minutes’ drive) and a couple of bistros and auberges in Néoules if you fancy a change from doing the cooking.

Time to explore? You could easily start by getting out on one of the walking or cycling trails that run from the site, or perhaps saddling up for a ride from the local stables (10 minutes’ drive). There are plenty more options over in the Sainte-Baume Natural Regional Park (25 minutes), a place that’s got great landscapes for hiking, mountain biking and climbing.
If you’d like something a little less active, perhaps go instead for a wander through the vineyards at Domaine de Trians (10 minutes) or some fishing at Lac de Besse (20 minutes). There’s also plenty of history to take in – maybe you’d like to explore the ruins of medieval Château du Castellas de Forcalqueiret (15 minutes) or try the interactive exhibitions at Royal Abbaye de la Celle (20 minutes).
For some urban wanders, head to Toulon (half an hour) for the Old Town and cable car, Barjols (45 minutes) for a traditional Provençal village experience, or Aix-en-Provence (55 minutes) to see where Paul Cézanne lived and worked.
