Camping Les Aubazines

The lake is the big highlight around here, of course – it’s a real hub of activities, including canoeing, kayaking and fishing, and there are also beach areas for paddling, swimming, playing games and picnicking. A heated pool and free-use tennis courts are also open in summer, or you could set off for a walk on one of the marked hiking trails. All of this is within walking distance, but it’s worth seeing what lies a little further afield – perhaps heading to the lake’s opposite shore for waterskiing at Universe Glide or to explore the fabulous waterside setting of 13th-century Château de Val (both 10 minutes’ drive). Les Orgues (five minutes), the rock formations that lent their name to the town, are well worth seeing too. Further away, there are lots of spectacular hiking and cycling trails in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park, and the chance to learn about a local industry at the Museum of Tanning and Leather (five minutes). Meanwhile, kids may like the chance to find their way out of the maze at Labyrinthe maïs de Bassignac (20 minutes).
