If you like holidays heavy on water activities, where better to pitch up than on a riverbank? Here, it’s the banks of the Saône river, and you’ll be staying at the family-friendly Camping De L'Arquebuse just outside Athée and half an hour's drive from Dijon. Kayaking, sailing, paddleboarding and fishing are all on the cards here. On site, there’s plenty more active stuff going on, including volleyball games, trampolining and pétanque tournaments. And if that’s not enough to tire the kids out, there’s also a playground. A small food shop is on site, where fresh bread can be ordered. Other foodie supplies for folk planning to blaze up their own barbecue fare can be picked up a 10-minute walk away in Auxonne. Auxonne has various eateries for tastes of local fare, with the closest restaurant based just a few minutes' walk away from the pitches. Practical stuff on site includes amenity blocks with toilets, showers and a washing-up area. There’s also a launderette with an ironing kit (handy news for those whose packing style leaves them a tad rumpled).

喜欢 Nice open space, very close to the town and river.

不喜欢 Cold faded washrooms. Site liked as though it could do with some TLC. It was mid-October so I guess the site was wound down for the year. Grass on the pitches was quite long.

喜欢 Great location with a 10 minute walk to town centre. Site was quiet and a little tired, needs some investment/refurb. Only stayed 1 night and it served what we wanted. Toilets/showers ok. Will stay over again in the summer and leave a more detailed review.

喜欢 Very quiet on this site, pitches were nice and flat, toilets and showers all in good working order

不喜欢 Not a lover of grass pitches , but these seemed good until the major downpour (9 hrs). We got stuck trying to get out. Fortunately the receptionist on site can to our rescue and pulled us out

喜欢 Nice small site with friendly staff. Short stroll into town. Small shop and restaurant on site

不喜欢 Watch out after it’s wet as we got stuck in the mud. Manager git us out expect he’s had to do it before haha.

喜欢 Wir waren sehr angenehm überrascht. Es ist ein kleiner Campingplatz, der für unseren Zwischenstopp sehr gut geeignet war. Die sanitären Anlagen sind zwar in die Jahre gekommen, werden aber sehr sauber gehalten. Das Personal ist sehr freundlich. Der Ausflug in den Ort war auch sehr interessant.

不喜欢 Es gibt nicht wirklich etwas Negatives zu berichten. Der Kiosk ist klein und erst spät geöffnet, war aber kein Problem, weil wir alles dabei hatten.

There are plenty of ways to explore this part of the Côte-d'Or. A top choice is to link up with the ‘blue route’, a scenic cycling and walking path which runs along the Saône, from Lyon to Haute-Saône. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, take a bird's-eye view from a hot air balloon (it’s possible to leave directly from the site). Load up the car for days out instead – 20 minutes away in Dole you can take tours of the Collégiale Notre-Dame de Dole church, Sanctuaire Notre-Dame de Mont-Roland and Museum of Fine Arts. If you’d prefer outdoor explores, aim for a wander in the pretty Jardin de Landon or splashing times at Aquaparc Isis. The capital city of Burgundy, Dijon (half an hour), is another fine choice for a visit. It may be known the world over for its mighty fine mustard, but it’s also a big wine-making area, so wine tours and tastings should be on the schedule here. It’s also got impressive buildings aplenty – on your to-see list should be the Cathédrale Saint-Bénigne de Dijon and the Church of Notre-Dame of Dijon, as well as the vast Palace of the Dukes, which houses the Musée des Beaux-Arts.
