It’s just a few minutes’ walk from base to Podgora beach, and there are plenty more seaside stretches along the Makarska Riviera, too. For walks requiring slightly more effort, make your way to Biokovo Nature Park to tackle the Biokovo massif, or do it by bike for extra pedal power – however you approach it, there are gorgeous coastal views to keep you company as you climb. Adrenaline junkies might also like to head to Zip Line Tučepi (10 minutes' walk) to fly across a scenic canyon, or ZipLine Croatia (50 minutes) to go soaring over the Cetina river. Opt for some island hopping by catching the one-hour ferry from Makarska (15 minutes’ drive) to Sumartin in Brač; once on the island, kayaking around its bays and beaches is a fine choice, and there are some fab spots for windsurfing. Or drive to Drvenik (20 minutes) to catch the 35-minute ferry to Sućuraj and explore Hvar’s pretty beaches and ancient historic sights instead. If it’s history you’re after, visit Split (just over an hour) to see the impressive Diocletian's Palace, considered to be one of the most imposing Roman ruins, and tour the Saint Domnius Cathedral while you’re there, too.
