Dolaucothi Estate Caravan Park

The area is steeped in history. The site is next door to the Dolaucothi Gold Mines, where you can take tours of the underground mines from different eras. The main tours each take about an hour. Your effort in climbing up the hillside at the start of the Roman tour will be rewarded by fantastic views over the surrounding countryside. You will take a trip into the only Roman underground workings in Britain and can really get into character by having a go on the water-lifting tread wheel when you come back to the surface. If you have a specific interest in archaeology or Roman history, this tour is a must for you. You will see the pick marks on the rock made by miners over 1500 years ago. The entrance to the Victorian workings is up 38 steps and along the Drover’s Road which has wonderful views over the valley. You will need your head lamp to venture into the unlit tunnels and caverns of this mine. The floor is rough shingle and the tour is quite strenuous, but you will get a real taste of what it was like to work underground in the nineteenth century. The half-hour ‘no steps’ Long Adit tour provides a glimpse into a real gold mine. The mine floor is flat and on the same level as the mine yard so is accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs. Other National Trust properties at Dinefwr, Cwmdu and Aberdeunant are a short drive away. Llanerchaeron near the coast in Ceredigion is also easily accessible. There are castles galore in Carmarthenshire, and the wonderful gardens at Aberglasney and Middleton are within easy reach.
