And camping is one of the best ways to explore its varied landscapes, giving you the chance to wake up to those gorgeous views without needing to move.

Why here? You can catch memorable sunsets and sunrises over the coast at this 12-acre campsite facing the stunning St Brides Bay. Rainbolts Hill Farm is in a prime west Wales location, five minutes' drive from Newgale beach for surfing and other watersports. Rather wander along beside the sea? It’ll take you 40 minutes on foot to reach the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. After hiking here – or perhaps through the wild Preseli Hills, just inland – set up a barbecue and cook home-reared meat bought from the site’s well-stocked farm shop.

Pencarnan Farm Caravan and Camping Site

Why here? At Pencarnan Farm Caravan and Camping Site you can wake up to views of St George's Channel. This campsite also overlooks the sparkling waters of Porthsele Cove, and it will take you just a few minutes on foot to reach the sand. If you prefer a larger beach, the stunning sweep at Whitesands – especially popular with surfers – is a mile away along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. You might see seals, porpoises and dolphins as you stroll, but for a better chance of spotting these playful ocean dwellers head out on a wildlife-watching boat trip from St Justinian’s (a 15-minute walk) to Ramsey Island.

Why here? Check out the gorgeous Manorbier beach from this dog-friendly holiday park – it’s only a half a mile away along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Just five miles from Tenby, this campsite is also a sought-after location for admiring the seaside resort’s historic town walls, harbour and castle. Jetskiing, kitesurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking are all available locally, and you can take a boat ride to Caldey Island to meet the resident chocolate-making monks. Back at the campsite, the pitches – both electric and non-electric – are spread across seven of the farm’s 25 acres of wood-clad countryside.

North Wales
Llandegla Trout and Coarse Fishery

Why here? This family-friendly campsite in Denbighshire, a five-minute drive from Llandegla, has well-stocked pools for all levels of expertise, including two for trout fly fishing and two for coarse fishing. You can reel in everything from mirror and common carp to barbel, tench and chub at Llandegla Trout and Coarse Fishery. If you haven't tried angling before, there's a worm fishing lake and family fishing area for beginners as well as an on-site tackle shop with gear for hire. For those seeking adrenaline-fuelled adventures, this site is ideally located for mountain biking, shooting and horse riding, too.

One more thing… There’s a café on site serving breakfasts (made from free-range ingredients) and fresh coffee. Later on, order dishes made from smoked trout caught in the park’s ponds.

Why here? From donkeys and llamas to the Moel Eilio hill and Elephant Mountains, there’s a diverse range of things to see at this campsite in Snowdonia National Park. Tyn Yr Onnen Farm is a 180-acre sheep farm that's been owned by the Griffiths family for more than three centuries – so there are fluffy lambs to meet in springtime, too. While the site has a simple rural feel, the facilities are excellent: expect a play area with a sandpit and a TV room housing table tennis and a pool table. A local bus service runs between Caernarfon and Beddgelert, so you can visit some of Snowdonia’s best attractions without a car.

Barcdy Touring Caravan and Camping Park

Why here? Sitting between the mountains and the sea, this is one of the best campsites in Snowdonia National Park. There’s just so much space to roam – Barcdy Touring Caravan and Camping Park has 12 acres of land for pitching up and an extra 28 acres of oak woodland and fields to wander through. Look out for local wildlife as you walk: everything from badgers to rare birds call this area home. The campsite is also five miles from Harlech for beach days on the expansive dune-backed sand, and four miles from Porthmadog for vintage railway rides through the serene Snowdonia landscape.

Hendre Farmhouse Orchard Campsite

Why here? You’ll have easy access to the green, green grass of Wales – and England, for that matter – from this riverside campsite close to the border between both countries. It’s in a scenic setting overlooking meadows and hills on the 177-mile-long Offa’s Dyke Path. For yet more tours of some of the UK’s loveliest countryside, visit the Brecon Beacons, Wye Valley and Forest of Dean (all under half an hour’s drive away). The spacious pitches make a comfortable backdrop for setting up a campfire or barbecue during relaxed evenings. Pick up supplies for supper from the town of Monmouth, just a 15-minute drive away.

Why here? Settle in for spectacular views over Cardigan Bay from this clifftop site. The area’s known for its 300-strong pod of dolphins, so you can keep an eye out for the animals splashing in the sea as you sit at your spacious pitch at Morfa Bychan Holiday Park. Alternatively, head to the pool (in high season) – it’s heated for comfortable swims whatever the weather. You could also take a bracing dip just off site on the pebble beach or, if you’d rather relax on sand, set off for the vibrant seaside town of Aberystwyth, 15 minutes’ drive away.

Why here? Pull up a camping chair and unwind right next to the small stream and woodland at this campsite in the northern foothills of the Brecon Beacons. With a policy of no loud music after 10:30pm, Rhydywernen Farm Camping Site is a peaceful, family-friendly option. Once evening sets in, fire up the barbecue for an alfresco meal or gather around a rented firepit after a dinner at one of Brecon’s pubs and restaurants (10 minutes’ drive). If adventures are on the cards, this site’s well set for that: you’ll be just off the main A470 road for easy access to hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing and gorge walking.

Why here? There’s no need to pull on your sturdiest walking boots to explore this lesser-known part of Wales. Woodlands Caravan Park is right next to the impressive Devil's Bridge Falls and just a few minutes' wander from the Vale of Rheidol steam train for rides through the lush Ceredigion countryside. The village pub is also just a few minutes away on foot. If you have brought those boots, though, wear them out on walking and birdwatching trips around the red kite feeding station of Bwlch Nant yr Arian's Forest Centre, four miles away by car in the nearby Cambrian Mountains.
