A small and dog-friendly pop-up site in Monmouthshire countryside near Pontypool, Cwmsoar Camping has well-maintained, spacious field and orchard pitches on a working farm surrounded by ancient woodlands. Quiet and rural it might be, but it’s also close to the lovely old village of Usk (10 minutes’ drive), with its fab – and handy – selection of pubs and takeaways to keep you fed and watered. As this is wild camping, facilities are few – mains water, portable toilets and a toilet-emptying station. For those going down the self-catering route on their break, barbecues and firepits are allowed on site and you can pick up goodies in Usk’s convenience stores too. Alternatively, you can try your luck in New Inn, a mile away, which has shops and places to eat. This peaceful spot is within easy distance of Llandegfedd Reservoir (10 minutes’ walk), where you can soon be out on the water for wild swimming, paddleboarding and canoeing adventures. Not brought your gear? No worries, simply hire boards and boats from Llandegfedd Visitor & Watersports Centre (10 minutes’ drive). For more sedate pleasures, the lake is a hopping place for fly fishing for trout from the bankside, and you can follow a circular walk along the water’s edge through quiet woodland or enjoy a short stroll with the kids through fields.

喜欢 Beautiful small site with access to some stunning trails, the motor home pitches were completely level. Easy access to the water taps and the owners are close by and friendly.

不喜欢 Not much, Showers and proper toilets would perfect the site but there were lots of warnings so I can’t say I didn’t know

Bella 钟型帐篷

喜欢 Very spacious bell tent - everything included. I came with my two daughters, and there was two single beds, and a double bed already set up. Opposite was our own allocated gazebo with a gas stove and chairs provided too. We packed quite light due to everything being there already.

不喜欢 The caravans further down the field were packed with families who were drinking, so they were really loud up until around 22:00. However, this isn’t the campsite or the owners fault. The owners came out on their own accord & it soon quietened down so was a lot more peaceful.

There wasn’t any signal at all - unless you found the right spot to get a little. But, we were camping so our phones wasn’t really needed all that much.

喜欢 Lovely peaceful site. We met the owner Henry who was great. Toilets were clean and the site was well maintained. The only downside for us (but possibly not others) was that most of the tent pitches were on a slight incline.

You’re never short of an ancient building in this corner of Wales; start off a day off castle-bagging at Usk (10 minutes’ drive) where medieval ruins border landscaped gardens, or head for Raglan, once a mighty defence castle and now open for self-guided tours. Moated Caerphilly Castle (35 minutes) has a trail of underground passages to explore, and if you haven’t had your fill of history by now, try glorious Tintern Abbey (40 minutes) for a stroll among peaceful ruins. If you’d rather be yomping than mugging up on history, there are plenty of challenging hikes in the Brecon Beacons National Park (15 minutes) or stroll to Symonds Yat Rock in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (40 minutes). The whole area is full of places to get out for a great walk or bike ride, and there's dry slope skiing in Pontypool too. If the kids are behaving, treat them to subterranean mine tours at Big Pit National Coal Museum (20 minutes), and if you all fancy a big city day out, Cardiff (45 minutes) hits the spot with rip-roaring RIB cruises around the bay and international musicals at Wales Millennium Centre.
