A small and dog-friendly pop-up site in Monmouthshire countryside near Pontypool, Cwmsoar Camping has well-maintained, spacious field and orchard pitches on a working farm surrounded by ancient woodlands. Quiet and rural it might be, but it’s also close to the lovely old village of Usk (10 minutes’ drive), with its fab – and handy – selection of pubs and takeaways to keep you fed and watered. As this is wild camping, facilities are few – mains water, portable toilets and a toilet-emptying station. For those going down the self-catering route on their break, barbecues and firepits are allowed on site and you can pick up goodies in Usk’s convenience stores too. Alternatively, you can try your luck in New Inn, a mile away, which has shops and places to eat. This peaceful spot is within easy distance of Llandegfedd Reservoir (10 minutes’ walk), where you can soon be out on the water for wild swimming, paddleboarding and canoeing adventures. Not brought your gear? No worries, simply hire boards and boats from Llandegfedd Visitor & Watersports Centre (10 minutes’ drive). For more sedate pleasures, the lake is a hopping place for fly fishing for trout from the bankside, and you can follow a circular walk along the water’s edge through quiet woodland or enjoy a short stroll with the kids through fields.

A neat, peaceful rural campsite with friendly owners. Basic but clean loos & water. Great for nature lovers, walks, reservoir access. Some feel it's pricey for basics, but atmosphere & owners win guests over, many keen to revisit.

The mobile and internet coverage is patchy, but you are in the nature, so there is no need for that.

Bramble bell tent

Liked We loved our friendly helpful hosts and the corner of field with a brook and its bank right by the tent were perfectly green and cool on those hot sunny days. The wooden picnic table was strong and sturdy and the separate "kitchen" gazebo is a great idea as we could stand up in it and it meant the tent didn't get crumbs in it.
Our girls loved our hosts, their dogs and horses and our camping neighbours, as well as the campfire.

Disliked I would say nothing, but for inspiration, I wonder if the following can be an idea for the future :)
Another place we stayed recently had dry toilets instead of portaloos. They were small wood shacks and used saw-dust so everything could be composted.

Liked Smaller site, not on a busy road. Nice host.
Lots provided in the bell tent which was really useful- no need to pack kitchen and cooking things. Lantern provided inside and solar lights outside. Nice set up.
Toilets and site very clean. Simple and effective. We really enjoyed making a fire in the fire pit provided (purchased wood bags with everything needed included).

Disliked The lack of showers could be an issue if staying longer but for a couple of nights it wasn’t a problem for us.

Liked Family run campsite, set in the beautiful Welsh countryside. Great location with access to walking trails and Llandegfedd reservoir.
We were able to pick our preferred pitch which was a good size and flat.
We were able to hire a fire pit and wood for the night, which saved us having to bring ours with us.
Would absolutely recommend and can’t wait to stay again.
Thanks so much for a wonderful time.

Liked 2 vans and one Bell tent which was immaculate. A lovely site, in the countryside no signal or electric which made the experience better, more chatting around the campfire. Even lovelier hosts. So helpful and friendly. We all look forward to seeing you again soon

Liked Stayed the night in the Bella tent with my partner and 9 year old son. Absolutely loved it! Would definitely stay again.

Disliked No signal phone signal but you’re camping so have a night off from the modern world lol

Local attractions

You’re never short of an ancient building in this corner of Wales; start off a day off castle-bagging at Usk (10 minutes’ drive) where medieval ruins border landscaped gardens, or head for Raglan, once a mighty defence castle and now open for self-guided tours. Moated Caerphilly Castle (35 minutes) has a trail of underground passages to explore, and if you haven’t had your fill of history by now, try glorious Tintern Abbey (40 minutes) for a stroll among peaceful ruins. If you’d rather be yomping than mugging up on history, there are plenty of challenging hikes in the Brecon Beacons National Park (15 minutes) or stroll to Symonds Yat Rock in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (40 minutes). The whole area is full of places to get out for a great walk or bike ride, and there's dry slope skiing in Pontypool too. If the kids are behaving, treat them to subterranean mine tours at Big Pit National Coal Museum (20 minutes), and if you all fancy a big city day out, Cardiff (45 minutes) hits the spot with rip-roaring RIB cruises around the bay and international musicals at Wales Millennium Centre.
