How does a peaceful hol in the very northern reaches of north Wales sound? If the answer’s an instant 'yes please', give Pencraig Campsite a go: it's in the Anglesey countryside on a smallholding next to a field full of ponies overlooking grassy green meadows. Pencraig Campsite has a good range of amenities, with modern toilets and showers plus a washing-up area. The sunset views are excellent from this site, creating a serene setting in which to stoke up the barbecue at the end of a day beachcombing around the lovely Isle of Anglesey. Shores within easy driving distance include Porth Trwyn and Church Bay (both 15 minutes); the latter has a café for filling up at as well as a small museum in an old thatched 17th-century cottage. For other eats, the local village of Valley is a five-minute drive from the site just off the island’s main coastal road with its pubs, takeaways, small shops and petrol station. A few bigger supermarkets are on the way to Holyhead less than 10 minutes’ drive away; come here for birdwatching too as it’s the gateway to scenic cliffside walks with the potential for puffin spotting at RSPB South Stack (20 minutes away). If you’ve brought a four-legged friend on the trip – as dogs are welcome at Pencraig Campsite – plenty of places for walkies are about, including around the colourful disused copper mine at Parys Mountain (half an hour away).

喜欢 We had a fantastic stay at Pencraig campsite. It's a lovely, small, family run site with good sized pitches and safe space for the children to play. It was nice and quiet so we slept very well! The views of the cows on the field and the horses are beautiful and everyone was so lovely and friendly there. The toilets and showers were just a short walk away and they were lovely and clean and very modern. Washing up facilities are great too. The site was easy to find on Google maps and signposted at the entrance. My youngest was messing about in and out of my car and caused the battery to go flat, i went to reception for help and they had a battery kit on hand! Really helpful and i was very impressed. Just a short drive to local amenities, and just a 10 minute drive into either Holyhead or Treadur Bay. We loved it that much that we have booked again!

喜欢 Proximity to Holyhead port, clean shower block and hot showers. Big pitch.

不喜欢 Other guests with music gone past midnight. This needs to be enforced by site management. Poor signage coming into the site from main road, can be easily missed..

喜欢 Beautiful views all round. Very peaceful. This is a small campsite with lovely showers and toilet block. I liked how safe it felt for our young children (aged 7 and 8) to go off to go to the toilet independently and play without cars going up and down. Would come back.

不喜欢 More would have liked than disliked.. there is only one sink for washing up and no laundry facilities.

喜欢 Not overcrowded and plenty of space on your pitch. The bathrooms on site are fantastic. Horses and cows are very close by which is always a bonus when we go camping 😊

Anglesey has numerous beaches to comb, including the quiet bay of Rhoscolyn (15 minutes' drive away) with calm, shallow water for paddling or kayaking and Traeth Llydan (20 minutes), a wide, sandy stretch of coastline. Llanddwyn Island is 45 minutes away – visit at low tide to reach it via the sand. For age-old history in between submerges in the sea, the Neolithic-era Barclodiad y Gawres burial chamber is 15 minutes’ drive away and the Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chamber takes 25 minutes to reach for investigating Wales’ prehistoric history. Slightly more recent heritage can be had on tours of Beaumaris’ castle and old jail; the pretty seaside village is also tiptop for shopping in small independent boutiques and filling up in traditional pubs. Off Anglesey, about an hour and five minutes’ drive away, is the base of Wales’ biggest mountain, Snowdon. If your legs are feeling up to it, hike to the summit – or just take the train…
