Pencraig Campsite: View from the pitches

General

  • Well maintained and secluded park with views of grassy fields
  • Less than five minutes’ drive to Valley and 10 minutes to Holyhead
  • Porth Trwyn beaches less than 15 minutes’ drive away

How does a peaceful hol in the very northern reaches of north Wales sound? If the answer’s an instant yes please, give Pencraig Campsite a go: it's in the Anglesey countryside on a smallholding next to a field full of ponies overlooking grassy green meadows.

The sunset views are excellent from this site, creating a serene setting in which to stoke up the barbecue at the end of a day beachcombing around the lovely Isle of Anglesey. Shores within easy driving distance include Porth Trwyn and Church Bay (both 15 minutes); the latter has a café for filling up at as well as a small museum in an old thatched 17th-century cottage.

For other eats, the local village of Valley is a five-minute drive from the site just off the island’s main coastal road with its pubs, takeaways, small shops and petrol station. A few bigger supermarkets are on the way to Holyhead less than 10 minutes’ drive away; come here for birdwatching too as it’s the gateway to scenic cliffside walks with the potential of puffin spotting at RSPB South Stack (20 minutes away).

If you’ve brought a four-legged friend on the trip – as dogs are welcome at Pencraig Campsite – plenty of places for walkies are about, including around the colourful disused copper mine of Parys Mountain (half an hour away).

Nice quiet location with a small number of pitches available which gives a calm, pleasurable environment to be in. Pitch space is plenty for van, vehicle and moving around it. Cute picnic benches in between the pitches and a lovely view off to the hills. Some planes fly over now and then from RAF valley which was nice to break a bit of the silence now and then. I liked the fact the shower room had a toilet and sink with shower, chair, mirror and hooks. Felt more like an individual bathroom and plenty of space to move around. They aren't the best looking of bathrooms but they work well, shower was nice and warm, maybe a little tight as it's a single cubicle compared with others I have used, but it worked well. It's based on a farm type site so it's not 5* showers and toilets but it was kept clean, topped up and tidy all the time. Very laid back, arrived and checked in by phone as owners were clearly working about the site but this was fine by me, felt trusting and saw them at a later time to say hello passing. I'm not overly chatty when I go away on my own so I preferred this. They are available by calling at all times and the small reception hut is obviously manned during the day but I had arrived later on in the day mid week off season. Level pitches, slight slant but easy to move my caravan single handed still. Perfect location to be out the way but local conveniences within 5 minutes by car and across the bridge in 7 minutes to Holy Island and some fantastic things to do, plenty of shops and conveniences, everything you could need and amazing views and places to adventure.

Local attractions

Anglesey has numerous beaches to comb, including the quiet bay of Rhoscolyn (15 minutes' drive away) with calm, shallow water for paddling or kayaking and Traeth Llydan (20 minutes), a wide, sandy stretch of coastline. Llanddwyn Island is 45 minutes away – visit at low tide to reach it via the sand.

For age-old history in between submerges in the sea, the Neolithic-era Barclodiad y Gawres burial chamber is 15 minutes’ drive away and the Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chamber takes 25 minutes to reach for investigating Wales’ prehistoric history.

Slightly more recent heritage can be had on tours of Beaumaris’ castle and old jail; the pretty seaside village is also tiptop for shopping in small independent boutiques and filling up in traditional pubs.

Off Anglesey, about an hour and five minutes’ drive away, is the base of Wales’ biggest mountain, Snowdon. If your legs are feeling up to it, hike to the summit – or just take the train…
