Care for a hol among spectacular Scottish scenery… on a fably kitted out park with access to its own loch for fishing – and with its own swish inn and restaurant to keep you fully fuelled? Come and call upon family-run Castle Cary Holiday Park in Dumfries and Galloway. Set a handy seven miles from Newton Stewart, Castle Cary is in splendid surrounds with royally fine views over the local woodland, fields and the estuary of the River Cree. It's centred around a 16th-century baronial castle, part of which has been restored as the Laird's Inn, a warm and cosy space of wooden beams, stone walls and open fires (it's best to book a table in advance here as it's rather popular). The inn's the place to retreat to after a day getting active around the site and in the local countryside: you can fish here or in river, sea or loch nearby; there's sailing, boating, horse riding and wild swimming all nearby, and Galloway Forest Park is 10 minutes' drive north. Castle Cary has excellent amenities to go with its smartly-kept pitches, including a chalet building with showers, toilets, a disabled-access toilet, a baby changing room, a laundry room and sinks; guests also have access to a dishwashing area. The site also has a family-run café which is open daily and which serves breakfasts, meals, snacks, coffee and sweet treats. Facilities are rather fine too, with two big heated pools (one indoor and one outdoor; charges apply for both), a heated paddling pool, a playground, crazy golf, a games room with pool tables and video games, and – pretty much guaranteed to make the kids go gaga – a donkey corner to greet the site's four-legged residents.

喜欢: That there was no internet coverage on the site so made for a relaxing stay.
The shower block was clean warm and each cubicle had toilet sink and shower.
Great food in the Laids Inn.

喜欢: Family friendly, nice spacious pitch (we had a fully serviced pitch)
Clean, warm bathrooms - when quiet very hot showers.
Facilities were really good, plenty do for the kids, great park, free golf. Kids loved feeding the donkeys.
Rabbits every where, was really good to go out at night and shine some torches.
The pub was lovely, food was really nice with helpful and friendly staff.
Lovely view of the pub/castle!

Swimming area was clean with a good size pool.

During the Easter weekend, the site put on an Easter egg hunt for the children. Was really good, all the children got an Easter egg! - added bonus!

不喜欢: Fishing wasn’t great. Wasnt many places around the fishing ‘loch’ to actually fish due to it being overgrown and not maintained. Not sure if there’s actually fish in there?

On a weekend there’s live entertainment which is VERY loud - not very peaceful like the surroundings if you’re not into it! (Which we wasnt!)

喜欢: Loved the site set up, loved the castle ruins and all the wildlife. Close to kirroughtree for biking. Easy to get to and Dalscone farm park is just under an hour away for kids. Site shop is ideal and the food is really nice, chose this over the restaurant due to prices. Overall loves our stay.

不喜欢: Toilet/shower rooms could use a small shelf being fitted.

喜欢: Lovely well kept holiday park. The local Easter bunnies came to visit! The site has a woodland walk to Creetown , its own pub, The Lairds Inn, where dogs are welcome, a couple of resident donkeys and a little loch. Great for a couple of days…

喜欢: The family feel.. i was incredibly stressed when we arrived. With a dog that wasnt used to travelling in a newly converted camper van, a mother with parkinsons made for a tough day. I arrived, the lady at reception was lovely, so welcoming, made me relax straight away. The pitch was easy to find, relatively level, the pub was dog freindly and served wonderful drinks etc. the ruins of the castle were fascinating and the areas to stroll in the grounds were clean, tidy and quiet at night. I would 100% recommend this place, we so will be back.

不喜欢: The ferral children breaking the new trees, i had a word and they stopped. Why are children dragged up and not raised with respect .

Hopefully I win the offer of the £250 Amazon voucher so I can buy £250 of chocolate. I'll smelt the £250 chocolate and re-enact the scene from Ghost with Willy Wonka and form a chocolate tea pot. Full proof plan.

不喜欢: Nothing . Spot on site for children with play area, swimming pool and family pub.
I will dislike though if I can't re-enact the scene from Ghost with Willy Wonka. Best make me win the £250 Amazon voucher.

To access a good number of these at once, drive 20 minutes to the activity and adventure centre Cream o' Galloway, where there's a woodland playground, rides and slides, nature trails and indoor play. Further afield at Loch Ken there's Galloway Activity Centre, for watersports, mountain biking and climbing. Keep the kids sweet at the Cocoabean Company (20 minutes), where they can get stuck into interactive workshops and indoor and outdoor play: yes, there's a chocolate shop here too.
