Headed for the beach? Gwithian (15 minutes’ drive) is a vast sandy stretch known for its surfing; likewise National Trust - Godrevy (10 minutes) is often the preserve of daredevil surfers riding large waves. If you’re after calmer waters for family swims, make for sheltered Carbis Bay (15 minutes), which has calm seas and gives access to the South West Coast Path if you’re feeling like a hike with spectacular views. When you’d rather practise your swing or putting skills, there’s a 12-hole golf course at Hayle (10 minutes’ walk), while keen birders can hike the marshy water meadows at RSPB Hayle Estuary Nature Reserve (10 minutes) to see egrets and oystercatchers as well as (an occasional) osprey. St Ives (20 minutes’ drive) is Cornwall culture central; explore the contemporary exhibitions at Tate St Ives, or inspect the weird and wonderful installations in the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. On the south coast, you can cross the sands at low tide to the medieval castle on St Michael’s Mount (also 20 minutes), and then explore the dinky seaside town of Marazion, which is filled with art galleries and bijou shops.
