The Garden of England (that’s Kent, in case you didn’t get the memo) is yours to explore from Lillyroos, a family-friendly site in the countryside that surrounds the seaside town of Deal. The location makes this spot equally suited to watersports enthusiasts (the coast is about 10 minutes’ drive away), keen countryside hikers and cyclists (with paths leading directly off the site) and history buffs, who can visit the medieval town of Sandwich (10 minutes) and the city of Canterbury (half an hour). With a kitchen preparing home-cooked breakfasts (featuring eggs laid by the resident chickens and freshly brewed coffee) and evening meals, plus a cosy bar serving local beers and ciders (which you can sip while lounging on a hay bale), this is also a sweet spot for anyone who is not quite to abandon all creature comforts. Speaking of food… Barbecues are allowed, and you can get your provisions in Deal or at the farmers’ market just down the A258 (a short drive or a five-minute walk), which also has a café. There’s a big-screen TV if you (or a member of your party) just cannot go without your footie while on holiday, and a play area for the kids. This is a quiet site: no shouting or singing after 10pm, and no music (whether live or amplified), so leave your beloved ukulele at home. Dogs are welcome, but do let the site owners know in advance if your canine companion is coming along. Amenities on site include toilet and shower blocks, a washing-up area, ice-pack freezing facilities and recycling points.

喜欢 The service was excellent with polite and helpful staff, the facilities are great and the goats are a nice touch. Nice small site, peaceful and quiet. Will definitely return.

喜欢 Super dog friendly with clean facilities! We had a super quiet mid week stay, with a large pitch and a very welcoming owner. Highly recommend! Bonus there is a bar onsite :)

喜欢 Lillyroos has everything. Great pitches on a lovely big site, excellent clean facilities, a bar, food, things for all ages to enjoy, dogs are welcome and the personnel communication is excellent. There’s a good local pub just a short walk from site, great dog walking, I even got a great curry delivered from a recommended restaurant in Deal. To add, this is the most excellent place to stay if you are going to or from France if you need a stopover. If it’s not the best site around in that whole area, show me where is.

喜欢 Fab little site. Kids loved the goats and we liked the proximity to some great places such as Broadstairs. The bar was very cute and the ability to watch a film on the Family Film Night was great.

不喜欢 We’ve stayed at campsites with better toilet and shower facilities, but the were fine and we never had to queue for a shower.

You can learn all about the area’s coal-mining past at the Kent Mining Museum at Bettshanger Country Park (five minutes’ drive), where there are also walking and cycling paths for all abilities, from a family-friendly tarmac track to some pretty challenging routes for experienced mountain bikers. Kids can also have a go at archery and orienteering. With its vast pebbly beach, two historic castles and long promenade skirted by a cycle path, Deal is a great destination for families. Grab some fish and chips and sit on Walmer Green (on Sunday afternoons, in the summer, there is live music at the bandstand), or stroll along the pier, keeping an eye on the Timeball Tower’s regular drop. Whether you’re into vintage rides (at colourful Dreamland amusement park) or modern art exhibitions (at Turner Contemporary), Margate (half an hour) has something for you. There’s also a sandy beach with a tidal pool, and an Old Town dotted with independent shops and cafés.
