If you’re after a rural camping adventure that will lighten your self-catering burden, you’ll be pleased to hear about KMF Camping on the Kirkharle Estate in Northumberland. It’s just a five-minute stroll away from Kirkharle Courtyard, which has artisan shops, a deli, a playground and a café called The Running Fox Bakery Café (just the spot for brunch), plus a parkrun for keen runners. But what of the campsite? The level paddock has spacious pitches with plenty of room to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The friendly, inquisitive resident alpacas may also give you a warm welcome. If you’re happy to give alfresco cooking a go, bring barbecues (off-ground only please) or hire a firepit when you arrive. Logs are also available to buy. Walkers can access lots of walks straight from the pitches, including a couple of great circular routes around the lake, where you’ll (hopefully) spy some local wildlife – and of course there are lots of sheep around in neighbouring fields. For those of you planning to cycle, there’s a secure outhouse for the safe storage of your bikes. The site owners are also happy to arrange a pick-up and drop-off from local stations – including Newcastle – for a small fee and some advance notice. Getting out to see the scenery should be straightforward – there are myriad walks and cycle routes in Northumberland National Park (10 minutes' drive) and drivers can join the extremely popular Northumberland 250 road-trip route at Otterburn (15 minutes). The views don't stop at sundown – KMF Camping is deep in Northumberland’s dark-skies area, and on a clear night you'll have spectacular uninterrupted views of the stars.

喜欢 Easy to get to from the A1, beautiful location, lovely owners, massive pitch and good facilities for an off-grid eco camping stay. The absolute bonuses were the hot showers, alpacas and the reading/games shed. We enjoyed a walk to Kirkharle Courtyard, lunch at Running Fox café and fresh milkshakes from the larder (£2.30 each and worth it!) followed by a little play in the small playground. Wallington National Trust site is under ten minutes drive away and so big we went back twice. The welcome and orientation on arrival was very helpful and of particular note are the robust barrows provided to tote your gear through to your pitch. There are six to seven pitches from what I could see. Some were very discretely placed, others had nearer neighbours but the site has been designed so the wild grass areas provide a clear barrier and pathways between pitches so your never felt like you didn't have your own space.

不喜欢 Literally nothing to not like about this site. While other reviews mention the road noise we weren't particularly bothered by it. Yes, it's a trunk road so there is some noise but it also means you have rapid access to the area once out the site.

喜欢 Absolutely lovely hosts who are very helpful when you need them. They have set up a lovely eco friendly site. The compost toilets were not intimidating. They were clean and not smelly. Lots of recycling options and a great little information hut with games and activities for all the family. Very spacious pitches with beautiful grass adding some privacy. They were set out away from others so noise was a minimum and felt private. Alpacas were a lovely addition for the kids to enjoy viewing and stroking.

不喜欢 A little noisy by a road in the distant but got use to the hum.

喜欢 Fabulous hosts ... lovely welcome on the site ... everything you needed for a weekend of camping.
Perfect spacing between pitches
Showers and a little washing up area,
Great little shed with local attractions information, games you can lend and pictures the children can colour in.
Llamas on site so friendly the children loved them , plenty of walks around and kirkharle courtyard only a few min walk away ...
Campsite is situated where a beautiful church is and beautiful views all around.

喜欢 Beautiful site, quiet, calm, not at all crowded, very relaxing. Loved the way the grass was left long with defined pitches. Liked the greener camping ethic - no problem with composting toilets and basic showers.
Next door cafe absolutely fabulous, awesome milkshake/milk machine.

Prior to your arrival you received a pre arrival email with clear instructions and also a text on the day again with instructions on how to find us. We not only have a map but also What3Words to our gate.
When you called I guided you to the site and we came round to check everything was ok.
You left our shepherd's hut in the worst state we have ever had and caused a fire and smoke damage, this included burning several holes in our floor and through a rug.
I have tried to contact you regarding this and you have ignored my messages and refused to pay the extra cleaning charge let alone the fire and smoke damage you cause. It is lucky the fire was not worse.

Our showers and toilets are cleaned thoroughly and as you were the only ones staying that night were pristine for your arrival.

Clean very welcoming ideal for one night stop off

The campsite grants easy access to the handy A696 road, and within roughly 10 minutes’ drive you can be at the National Trust-owned properties of Wallington – with collections of paintings, decorative arts and ceramics – or Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, known for its neoclassical architecture and garden walks. Further afield, Cragside (half an hour) turns up art deco interiors and woodland strolls. Those of you with a fascination for all things historical can head for Hadrian’s Wall (20 minutes' drive) for a yomp in the footsteps of ancient Roman, or drop by the old Roman camp at Vindolanda (35 minutes). If the kids object to all that culture, treat them to close encounters with meerkats, raptors and giant bats at Northumberland Zoo (35 minutes), or spend the day at Alnwick Castle and Gardens (45 minutes), home of Harry Potter film locations, a curiously enticing poison garden and medieval enactments. Maybe they’d also like a day at the beach? Bamburgh (an hour) has seemingly endless expanses of sand and a stately castle to explore.
