Up for a dog walk along a bubbling beck straight from your pitch, or would you rather spend your days sightseeing in historic York (20 minutes by bus)? Whatever your holiday style, North Yorkshire’s Willow Campsite is bound to have a quiet corner in its tree-sheltered camping field that’s just right for you. Tucked away by two wildlife ponds – where you can spot ducks and occasional kingfishers flitting among bullrushes – tree-shaded Willow Campsite forms part of a larger, adults-only holiday park. Your needs are very well taken care of indeed; you can refuel in the wooden-beamed Willow Farm Café (open daily 9am–4pm; they do an excellent afternoon tea and there’s a souvenir shop right next door), or fire up a barbecue (raised off the grass please). If that doesn’t appeal, make a beeline for the local foodie pub (half an hour’s walk) instead. The site also has a bunch of handy practical facilities, from disabled access and wet rooms in the amenities block to a pot-washing sink and laundry room. Wifi reception can be a bit patchy around the camping area, but it’s strong in the café. This being North Yorkshire, there may be the odd rainy day – but never fear, there’s a cinema and bowling alley at Clifton Moor Retail Park (10 minutes’ drive), or you could console yourselves with an afternoon’s shopping at York Designer Outlet (20 minutes).

喜欢 Good shower rooms, although only 2 of the four were functional. Pleasant location.

不喜欢 Very overpriced for 1 person on a bicycle with a small tent. (No backpacker pitches were available to book).Tent pitches were about 250m from the showers, toilets and dishwasher sink, which was inconvenient to say the least. There was no hot water for dishwashing because they were awaiting a replacement boiler. A kettle was provided, but nowhere to plug it in. Returning to my pitch 250m away to boil a kettle then carry it back was not a viable option.

喜欢 Good location. Nice and quiet. Being able to park next to your tent. Bus to York outside the main gate. Beautiful walk just outside the site.

不喜欢 Rats burrowing under the tent and moving my air bed, and in the day time coming for food. Showers very outdated with only 6kw electric stand alone units. Air flow inside shower units very poor with fans blocked and creating high humidity and not being able to dry off without opening the door. No hot water for washing pots( a two week lead time for boiler, somewhat crazy as I would get one the same day). Barrier not working and very outdated.

喜欢 Nice tidy site with all facilities needed and a nice cafe on site.

不喜欢 Having our electric hook up taken down because the site was overbooked for Friday. Meaning food in a fridge that was connected went off!

喜欢 The value for money. How quiet and clean and self check in.

不喜欢 Toilet too far away from tents (got a not so great knee)so had to drive down when needing toilet. Arrived for 1.00pm and struggled to find a spot close enough to the electric hook up. People arrived after us and they really did struggle to find a spot.

Keen historians might start their exploration of York (20 minutes by bus/15 minutes by car) at the landmark Minster, where free guided tours take in the glittering stained-glass Rose Window as well as Roman and Anglo-Saxon artefacts in the Undercroft Museum. Continue your immersion in culture with an amble around the Roman/medieval city walls, stop into the Castle Museum to see recreations of Victorian streets and book evening events at the Barbican theatre. There’s more rich heritage to be admired at gorgeous Castle Howard (half an hour’s drive), with sumptuous apartments stuffed full of great art from the likes of Reynolds and Gainsborough. National Trust-owned Beningbrough Hall (15 minutes) is a close contender in the arts stakes, with a collection of paintings squirrelled away from London’s National Gallery. Anyone with an interest in wildlife can find plenty to see and do: there are raptor flying displays at York Bird of Prey Centre (15 minutes), while a wander in the Howardian Hills National Landscape (20 minutes) might bring you sightings of deer and hares in woodland and meadows. If your interest veers towards more powerful beasts, there’s flat racing at York (also 20 minutes) and a jumps course at Wetherby (half an hour).
