The best views of the Peak District National Park are from high up – so say the folk at Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club. And they should know: they launch their gliders from a fabulous spot above Great Hucklow, which they also open up to guests who’d like to find a scenic spot to stay. Fancy having a go at gliding while you’re here? Trial flights can often be organised, but are always dependent on availability and weather conditions. But whether you head up into the air or stay at ground level, the views from here are excellent – and watching the gliders in action is just as great. The airfield is active throughout the day and on Thursday evenings from Easter onwards. Gliding types are a sociable bunch, with guests welcome to join them at the clubhouse for breakfast or evening meals and drinks. There’s also a well-stocked licensed bar there for post-flight drinks (not pre-flight, of course… beer and flying isn’t a great combination). The clubhouse houses a couple of showers and some toilet facilities; there’s also a separate toilet block close to the pitches. Guests have access to a wifi connection to help with trip planning and sharing pics of your fabulous location. This location isn’t just scenic in itself – it’s also fairly central to the Peak District, so you’ll be within easy reach of several of the national park’s top spots including Bakewell, Chatsworth, Mam Tor and Blue John Cavern (all within 25 minutes’ drive).

喜欢 Being able to see the gliders set off. Clubhouse is nice to have a drink or two after a busy day.

不喜欢 Toilets need to be upgraded a little

The out side toilets will be upgraded over winter, but bare in mind that they are a free service that we offer to anybody who visits the peak District

喜欢 We only stayed for one night but could have quite happily stayed for a few more. The camping site is small and only allows for six which is perfect for that peaceful getaway, loads of room and beautiful views. Watching the gliders take off and land is an added bonus. The clubroom was friendly and welcoming. Food was good, well presented and reasonably priced. An incredible position to watch the eclipse and meteor showers. John and Sylvia, plus the gliders were lovely. All in all we will definitely return.

不喜欢 The only reason I dropped two stars was for the outside toilets. I understand it is an old building and although they were clean and well stocked there was only a cold tap that wasn't fixed properly. A bit of a spruce up would go a long way. I didn't use the clubhouse facilities so I can't compare but I expect they were better.

喜欢 Absolutely amazing place, we stayed last night and had the best time. Sylvia and John were awesome and so lovely to my boys. My youngest son said they were two of the nicest people he's ever met and I agree. ☺️ We watched the gliders all day, enjoyed a yummy evening meal at the clubhouse and then spent the night star watching. Everywhere was very clean and we felt very safe which is always important when I'm on my own with them. The members were so friendly and talked to us about gliding when we asked a couple of questions. The best place we've pitched yet.

喜欢 John and Sylvia lovely hosts. Easy check in. Views of the gliding from the campsite. Bar and food excellent. Showers were brand new with access to Hairdryer. It’s a great stop over with opportunities to walk around the lovely peaks. Couple of pubs 40 mins walk away too.
