Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club

A aimé We only stayed for one night but could have quite happily stayed for a few more. The camping site is small and only allows for six which is perfect for that peaceful getaway, loads of room and beautiful views. Watching the gliders take off and land is an added bonus. The clubroom was friendly and welcoming. Food was good, well presented and reasonably priced. An incredible position to watch the eclipse and meteor showers. John and Sylvia, plus the gliders were lovely. All in all we will definitely return.

N'a pas aimé The only reason I dropped two stars was for the outside toilets. I understand it is an old building and although they were clean and well stocked there was only a cold tap that wasn't fixed properly. A bit of a spruce up would go a long way. I didn't use the clubhouse facilities so I can't compare but I expect they were better.

A aimé Absolutely amazing place, we stayed last night and had the best time. Sylvia and John were awesome and so lovely to my boys. My youngest son said they were two of the nicest people he's ever met and I agree. ☺️ We watched the gliders all day, enjoyed a yummy evening meal at the clubhouse and then spent the night star watching. Everywhere was very clean and we felt very safe which is always important when I'm on my own with them. The members were so friendly and talked to us about gliding when we asked a couple of questions. The best place we've pitched yet.

A aimé John and Sylvia lovely hosts. Easy check in. Views of the gliding from the campsite. Bar and food excellent. Showers were brand new with access to Hairdryer. It’s a great stop over with opportunities to walk around the lovely peaks. Couple of pubs 40 mins walk away too.

A aimé Amazing location and great views in all directions. Camping area is located in the public viewing area for the gliders so great for watching the gliding. Access to the camping area is about limited to a lwb Crafter-style van and really wouldn't want anything bigger on the local roads! Remember to bring leveling ramps!

John and Sylvia who run the site are lovely, welcoming people and I'd really recommend going down to the clubhouse to chat with them and the friendly members of the gliding club whilst enjoying a pint of local beer!

This is definitely more of a "pubstop" feel site with great facilities than a manicured campsite with places for the kids to run around which suited me perfectly. There's loads of public footpaths/byways to take you in all directions. It's about 1 hour on a bicycle to Ladybower and Bakewell (save some energy for the bike ride back up!)

A aimé The people, the facilities, the bar, the food and especially seeing my 12 year old take his first flying lesson in the safe hands of Big Bob!

The site doesn’t take tents (my mistake) due to the windy location, but Bob kindly allowed to us to move to a safe location as not to spoil the holiday.

He also helped me out with car problems!!

Bridgett on reception was also very kind and helpful.

A aimé We had a fantastic stay at the Derbyshire & Lancashire Gliding Club and would highly recommend it. The atmosphere was welcoming from the moment we arrived, and it was a real treat to be surrounded by gliders, launch activity, and the buzz of the airfield. Watching the gliders being prepared and seeing them climb away on tow made the whole stay feel special for anyone with even a slight interest in aviation or gliding.

The food was excellent throughout our visit. The full English breakfast was one of the best we’ve had at a campsite — freshly cooked, generous portions, and exactly what you need before a day on the hill or around the airfield. We also tried the chilli, which was hearty and full of flavour. A special mention has to go to John’s beer-battered fish, which was absolutely superb. The batter was light and crispy, the fish was perfectly cooked, and it was clear it was made with care. Whilst Silvia poured the perfect pint in the club bar.

The site itself is well kept, peaceful, and has amazing views across the surrounding countryside. Sitting outside watching the gliders return to circuit and make smooth final approaches was a highlight of the trip.

What really stood out, though, was the incredible effort put in by John and Silvia. They seem to do absolutely everything — from looking after guests and preparing food to keeping the site running smoothly and creating such a friendly atmosphere. Nothing was too much trouble, and they made everyone feel genuinely welcome. The club has a huge asset in John and Silvia, and their hard work and dedication are a big part of what makes this place so special.

Overall, a brilliant combination of friendly people, great food, and a unique gliding setting. We’ll definitely be back for another landing here soon!

You need to have a flight next time you come

A aimé This was our first trip in our TentBox with our two children, and it couldn't have been a better experience. We loved how peaceful and quiet the site was. During our stay, there were only two other campers, which made it feel very relaxing and secluded.

It was wonderful watching the gliders throughout the day, which added something really special to our visit. There is also a pub on site where you can order food, and we were very impressed with the quality. The food was excellent and reasonably priced.

John and Silva are fantastic hosts. They are incredibly friendly, kind, and always willing to help with anything you need.

The site has shower and toilet facilities, as well as outdoor toilets for use during the night. Fortunately, we didn't need to use them, but it was reassuring to know they were available.

Overall, we had a fantastic stay and would highly recommend this campsite to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway in a beautiful setting. We will definitely be returning.

N'a pas aimé The only slight downside was entirely due to our own inexperience with the TentBox rather than the campsite itself. The site can be quite exposed and windy, and we hadn't secured our rain cover properly, which made the TentBox noisier than it needed to be during the night. Now that we know what we're doing, it wouldn't be an issue on future visits.
