Lost River. Invisible Mountain. Cathedral Pines. Like many of the place names in the area, Moose Crossing RV Park reminds you this is wilderness country. Not that you could be mistaken: the park looks out to the high white peaks of the Lost River Range and the trails to the wide blue yonder start just out the back gate. Wild the surrounds might be, but this Idaho park places a high value on its visitors and their comfort. The washrooms have hot showers and you can access free wifi all around the park. If you're destined for Oregon or Yellowstone, you'll appreciate the laundry and dryers. Wherever you're heading, head for the pavilion to meet up with friends or make new ones. The old mining town of Mackay 10 minutes' drive away is the starting point for many an outdoor adventure and also where you'll find stores and eateries. The town's Lost River Museum tells the story of the area, from the first pioneers to the prospectors, and the Mine Hill tour lets you walk through the history on 24 miles of upland trails, taking in ghost towns, crumbling mines and rusting cable cars.

Moose Crossing RV Park is halfway along the Peaks To Craters Scenic Byway, 140 miles of Idaho wilderness people cross the continent to see. Starting in Carey and finishing in Challis (both an hour's drive from the park), this winding circuit goes from wetlands to high deserts and mountain ridges. A three-hour trip in total, many travellers take detours enroute to see Mt Borah, the state's highest peak, or to fish Mackay Reservoir. The craters in question are the Craters of the Moon National Monument (two hours, 15 minutes), a landscape of lava flows bursting with wild flowers and wildlife. The volcano is long gone, but to feel the roaring power of nature head to Lower Creek Falls, just outside Mackay, where tracks take you past increasingly lively rapids to a truly deafening waterfall. If you want to get closer to the foaming waters, Mackay is the place to hire kayaks and join up with guided river trips. It's easy to forget the stresses of town in all this nature, but Idaho Falls (an hour and a half) spreads out galleries and museums along a city-wide river trail. Wherever you go, you'll hear the call of the wild.
