You’ll have no such difficulties at Europe Tents at Camping Begur – five minutes’ drive from the Med at Fornells and close enough to the historic cities of Girona and Barcelona for sightseeing trips. And what’s more, a stay at this leafy, laid-back Costa Brava campsite will see you enjoy a hefty dollop of relaxation in your pre-erected tent too.
So what can you expect on the site itself? Supervised swimming in the outdoor pool, football and basketball facilities, a pitch for playing beach football and volleyball, and a play area for toddlers. Speaking of your kids, the on-site ents team organises activities and workshops for them so you can enjoy some quiet time – or head to the gym to hone your fitness regime – knowing they’ll be well looked after.
There are numerous barbecues (to be used with charcoal) around the campsite where you can grill up a feast; buy your provisions from the supermarket close to the entrance. You also have the choice of a bar and à la carte restaurant with a sun terrace, and a takeaway service if you’d rather eat at your spacious accommodation – but don’t miss out on the lively musical evenings back in the bar.
Practical facilities include a motorhome station with a pressure hose for washing vehicles and a vacuum cleaner for tidying up their interiors.

When days by the sea beckon, Fornells is but five minutes’ drive away, with its hidden rocky cove and yacht harbour to have a wander around. Accessed by steep steps down the cliffside, Platja Fonda is a quiet pebble choice for those days when you’re not keen on company, while the sandy expanse at Aiguablava (both also five minutes) has shallow water with safe swimming for novice kids.
If you’re all beached out, treat younger offspring to a day on the gaily painted carousels and gentle slides at Pp’s Park Platja d’Aro (25 minutes), or get their little legs working on the climb up to 16th-century Castell de Begur (10 minutes) for spectacular views over the coves and bays of the Mediterranean coastline.
Urban days out can include a trip to Barcelona (90 minutes, best for older kids) to marvel at the rainbow-coloured interior of Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Família and watch street artists along Las Ramblas boulevard. Closer to base camp is Girona (55 minutes), where most kids will enjoy seeing the surrealist sculptures in Parc de les Ribes del Ter or walking the ancient ramparts wrapping around the historic city centre.
