Start explores hereabouts with a day or so in Portorož, five minutes’ drive away – it’s more than Mediterranean beaches (not that anyone needs more than that), so wander along to the thermal baths, the casino or the Rolling Stones museum for a little satisfaction. You can’t always get what you want though… If Portorož has created mixed emotions, saunter along the coast as far as the port city of Piran (15 minutes) where there are more casinos to test luck, as well as museums, some spectacular seventh-century walls and local eateries around Tartini Square. Slovenia may not leap to mind when thinking of winemaking powerhouses, but travel the 20 minutes to Koper to put that to the test. Post-wine tasting, stick around for a stunning Gothic-style palace, a waterpark and more museums, then get a feel for local industry at the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park saltpans 10 minutes from base. For those tiring of Slovenian outings, the Italian border is just 20 minutes’ drive away – cross over for visits to the pretty port town of Muggia and the Venice-esque Trieste within half an hour. As a bonus? Venice itself is just a little over two hours away...
