But if you're around for a restful stay, amble peacefully towards the village of Avis, a place that took an important role in Portugal's history and which has the architectural heritage to prove it. It's called the village of warrior monks as it was donated by Alfonso 2 to Fernão Anes, master of Portugal's only military order, and is filled with religious buildings such as the Convent of St. Benedict of Avis, the Pelourinho, the castle walls and its towers. Anyone staying in Portugal within a couple of hours' drive of Lisbon should also get there with some immediacy, and Albufeira do Maranhão Camping Park is about an hour and a half away. Among the many recommendations are the Museu do Teatro Romano/Roman Theatre Museum, Lisbon City Museum or just wandering around drinking in Lisbon's café culture – but do have at least two days in the city to find your own faves.
