If you want a getaway where the kids aren’t just an afterthought, the family-friendly Minicamping Hendriks Wijkje, five minutes from the village of Elim in Drenthe, may be the right spot for you.
There are Shetland ponies on site that the kids can ride and help to take care of, and horse-drawn carriages waiting to take all ages for a jaunt. Kids can get their energy out on the playground too and, if the weather turns, there are loads of toys and games at reception.
Keep them entertained off site with a trip to Schoonhoven, a recreation area 10 minutes’ drive from Hendriks Wijkje, where they can paddle around the two swimming lakes, relax on the sandy beach or explore the walking trails through the woods. Fishing enthusiasts can cast a line at the fishing lake in a quieter part of the recreation area.
If the weather isn’t cooperating, never fear – guests also have free access to De Dolfijn swimming pool in Hoogeveen, 15 minutes’ drive from Hendriks Wijkje, where a leisure pool with diving board, hot tub and trampoline, a competition pool and two toddler pools await.
Feeling peckish after all that activity? Start your day with eggs laid by the site chickens and polish off some fresh sandwiches made for your lunch. The site has regular barbecue evenings where you can grab a bite and meet your fellow guests too… when you’ve eaten your fill, treat yourself to an ice cream from reception to top it all off.

There’s plenty in the area around Minicamping Hendriks Wijkje to keep you and the kids entertained. Slagharen theme park and waterpark (10 minutes’ drive from the site) and Drouwenerzand Amusement Park (40 minutes) are both full of rides and other activities that’ll make the day go by in a snap.
Budding stargazers should blast off to Planetron, a planetarium and observatory (30 minutes): the Zeiss planetarium will make you familiar with the skies and the powerful telescope will bring you out among the stars.
Within 30 minutes of Hendriks Wijkje, keep things grounded with a trip to Zoo Bizar – the Netherlands' smallest zoo – where the kids can hang out with bats, lizards, spiders and loads more, or to Wildlands Adventure Zoo where you can see exotic animals in the savannah, jungle and arctic settings.
Of course, your hols don’t have to be all kids’ activities all the time… get a taste of the area’s history and culture with visits to the Drents Museum (35 minutes) and Stedelijk Museum Coevorden, 20 minutes away.
