When you’re travelling in a touring vehicle and want to spend some time in a city, the sweet spot you need to find is that one that’s easily accessed from the motorway and also well placed for getting to the city centre on foot or via public transport. If you’re off to Messina, up on Sicily’s northeastern coast, that place is Parking Via Bonino, a motorhome aire 2.5 kilometres from the city centre. It’s easy to get here via the nearby Messina Gazzi motorway junction, and once you’re all settled in it’s then equally easy to get out again, using the local bus or tram from the stops just outside the site to reach the centre or other destinations like Taormina. The city centre is easily walkable from the site as well. This is a fuss-free motorhome aire rather than a fully fledged campsite, so don’t come along expecting lots of facilities. In particular it’s worth noting that there are no toilets or showers, so you’ll need to be self sufficient with a bathroom on board. It’s all very clean, quiet and well maintained though – and safe too, with entrance and exit barriers and 24-hour CCTV. The site’s facilities are completely geared towards touring guests – you’ll have access to a fresh water supply, grey and black water disposal (for chemical toilet cassettes only) and a wifi service to help you plan your outings. A good collection of shops, restaurants and cafés are within a few minutes’ walk so you won’t have to go far to find food and other bits.

It’s nice and easy to get to Messina city centre, so you can explore at your leisure, perhaps popping in a few times rather than having to do it all in one go. And there’s plenty to do and see here, starting with the cathedral (home to the world’s largest astronomical clock), the Orion Fountain and the Norman-era Chiesa dei Catalani. After that, you’ll still need to take in the MUMe Museum, stroll along the promenade and around the harbour, look out for statues and smaller churches and go shopping along the smart Viale San Martino. And of course you’ll need to allocate plenty of time to the pastry shops, gelaterias and restaurants, trying everything from swordfish to cool coffee granita. Got a bit longer? Good. How about a hydrofoil trip to the Aeolian islands from Messina, venturing into the hills to Dinnammare (45 minutes’ drive) or looking out for birds on a walk around Ganzirri Lakes (35 minutes)? It’s also possible to get to Taormina (35 minutes’ drive; public transport available).
