Seeing yourself wandering along hiking trails (easy or challenging – your choice), breathing in fresh mountain air and plucking wild strawberries as you go? Settle at Savona site Camping Vallescura, 10 minutes’ drive from San Pietro d’Olba and 15 from Urbe. The area around this peaceful site is an excellent one for hikers, with lots of local trails taking in villages, waterfalls and lakes, and the slopes of Mount Beigua half an hour’s drive away. Naturally, the mountain biking around here is top-notch too, and the team on site are happy to point you towards suitable routes to pedal or ramble along. Hols needn’t be entirely packed with activity, of course – and for rest breaks between outings there’s plenty to keep you entertained on site. A dip in the swimming pool (or a splash in the kids’ pool for smaller guests) will be most welcome after a lengthy hike/bike ride/drive, and there’s also a tennis court, bowling alley and ping pong table for folk who’ve got a bit of energy left. As you roam along paths nearby you may well be able to pluck wild berries and mushrooms ready to eat; a more ready source of sustenance (especially for those who aren’t up on which mushrooms are the friendly ones) can be found at the site’s bar, which sells snacks and self-catering supplies along with cool drinks.

Even if you don’t consider yourself a hardcore hiker or biker, a bit of walking or cycling should certainly be on the schedule here – the team on site know their stuff, so they can point you towards a suitable route that sits wherever you like on the scale from easy to muscle-busting. Mount Beigua (half an hour’s drive) is one of the top picks for honed hikers, and its lower reaches have some scenic strolls for those less inclined to do the climb. For a different burst of activity, there’s a riding school half an hour away that organises horseback outings for experienced horse handlers and novices alike. If that pace is too gentle for you, head to Pontinvrea for high-speed go-kart circuits. It’s highly recommended that you spend a bit of time beetling between local towns and villages too, visiting Sassello (20 minutes) for its frescoed palaces and baroque churches, Campo Ligure (40 minutes) for its historic centre and hilltop castle, and Acqui Terme (an hour), where you can soak in thermal waters in a spa town surrounded by vineyards.
