SunLodge at Camping Village Mare Pineta

Seaside self-catering stays are sorted with supreme ease at SunLodge at Camping Village Mare Pineta, 25 minutes’ drive north of Trieste. This is a place that combines well-equipped holiday homes with a fab Sistiana location right on the coast, with direct beach access and views out over the Adriatic Sea. Handily, much of the kit you’ll need for a family holiday is provided at this site: the caravans all have comfy beds, air conditioning, heating, a private bathroom and a well-equipped kitchen corner, with outdoor furniture out on the verandah for alfresco meals and drinks. Having all those essentials sorted means you can entirely focus on the having-fun part of the holiday… head straight to the beach, take a dip in the open-air pool or challenge your companions to a game of tennis or basketball. Perhaps you’ll fancy hiring watersports kit or following walking/bike routes around the site. There’s a playground on site too, and kids’ activities run several times a week in summer. Food needs are equally well served here – if you don’t fancy cooking, aim for the pizzeria, the snack bar or the restaurant, where meals are served up with a side order of lovely sea views. There’s also a bar on site if all you need is a cool beer or two. If you’re in a sociable mood, the open-air theatre by the restaurant is the place to be – music plays here through to the small hours. And if you’re not? Don’t worry: the lodges are far enough away that you won’t be disturbed by any of the late-night beats.

Lokala sevärdheter

Head straight to the seaside for days at the beach, watersports including windsurfing, sailing and kayaking or diving courses at the scuba centre 10 minutes’ walk away. There are also some lovely coastal walks to be had from the site: walk past the harbour to more lovely beaches, or aim west for clifftop castles around Duino. The coastline is stunning around here, but there are intrigues to be had underground too. See some of it for yourself at Cave Towers Slivia (five minutes’ drive) or the huge Grotta Gigante (15 minutes), packed with stalactites and stalagmites. For a city day, take yourselves down to Trieste (25 minutes) to stroll around the piazzas and harbour, visit the Roman Theatre and wander along the sides of the Grand Canal. It’s worth scheduling a stop at Miramare Castle (20 minutes) on your way there or back, too – the intricately decorated 19th-century building has a stunning seafront location with views that are particularly fine at sunset.
