Even those whose French lingo is somewhat less than basic should comprendre the main points of this smashing Poitou-Charentes park: it has yurts (rather splendid ones, in fact), and it's in a heavenly location with stunning views all around.
Channel your inner Mongolian – everyone should have one – in style here, as the luxury accommodation at Yourte au Paradis is built in traditional style, all snugly insulated to be cosy all year. A private bathroom and toilet comes with each yurt, along with heating, beds made up, a microwave, outdoor furniture and plenty of space inside and out.
Your hideaway haven is on a lush and colourful site, five minutes' drive from the Deux-Sèvres department town of Souvigné; between Poitiers and La Rochelle, and half an hour's drive from the famed marshland of Marais Poitevin. If you're after theme park days – everyone should have at least one of these too – the multimedia park of Futuroscope is 50 minutes' drive away just past Poitiers, and historic Puy de Fou is an hour and a half from the site in the Vendée.
Wander peacefully from your yurt to lounge around the colourful gardens on site, say hi to the resident alpaca, Shetland ponies and Ouessant sheep, take a dip in the pool, or let the kids loose at the slide, swings, trampoline and mini above-ground pool. Heavenly? Mais oui.

Potter into the Poitou-Charentes countryside right from the yurt park for easy ambles among green countryside, or drive on a day trip for heritage trips to historic sites like the Château de Marconnay, within half an hour's drive at Sanxay, and the many old sights of La Rochelle, an hour and 15 minutes away.
A more ancient option close to home is the Tumulus of Bougon (15 minutes' drive), a set of five Neolithic monuments with accompanying museum. And if your smalls would rather see local critters than local monuments, the Zoodysée wildlife park is 40 minutes away.
For more active hours, tackle the likes of climbing, archery, treetop, watersports and mountain biking at the leisure park of Lambon (10 minutes), or boating and cycling around the Marais Poitevin.
