Swimming, diving, boating, surfing or just lying on the sand… Camping Oléron Loisirs's Charente-Maritime setting on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean has it among a mild sunny climate suitable for outdoor activities of all sorts. Recommended days and activities of the team include strolling on the 2.8 kilometres of nearby beach with its views out towards Fort Boyard, and strolling along to Port du Douhet for an eve in one of the restaurants serving local cuisine. Another tiptop trip is to nearby Chassiron Lighthouse, home of a museum and of smashing views over Oléron's east coast, the famed fortification Fort Boyard and the Île de Ré (fair warning: the top of the tower is 224 steps up to the top of the tower). From the lighthouse, it's about six kilometres to the fishing village of La Cotinière, to watch fishing trawlers come in and out. The citadel of Le Château-d'Oléron is another popular island destination, dating back to the seventeenth century and classified as an official historical monument in 1929. Exhibitions and events are regularly held inside its well-fortified walls. Other options include local markets at Saint-Denis d'Oléron and La Brée les Bains or biking around the island's oyster farms dotted along the coast. Off the island, La Palmyre Zoo is within about 45 kilometres, Rochefort 52, Royan 62 and La Rochelle 90.
