Dotted by mature trees and bordering the Sarthe river, Camping de L’Hippodrome is set on three hectares of peaceful grounds. This pleasant spot is really well set up for family breaks, with a baby-changing area and a playground with swings and ping-pong, as well as tennis courts and a TV room for older kids. Life centres around the two pools (one of which is a paddling pool for the kids) during the day, and at night in high season there’s regular entertainment to keep everyone happy – pétanque tournaments, barbecue nights and even karaoke, if you’re feeling in good voice. You can try fishing on the river from here, and there’s easy access for boats too, as well as plenty of options for active types within half an hour’s drive, including golfing, cycling and horse riding. The site is near the handsome town of Sablé-sur-Sarthe, with a riverside path leading you right into the centre in a few minutes (on foot or by bike) to have a nosey around its castle and clutch of museums. Neat hedges provide privacy at all the pitches here, and guests have access to two smart shower blocks with full disabled access, plus a handy little store (May to September) where you can pick up your daily baguette as well as local produce (like the renowned Petits Sablés shortbread) and drinks. If you’ve forgotten something (hairdryers, iron or bedding), chances are Reception will be able to help, and staff there can also fill you in on day trip information and bike hire.

Tyckte om 2nd year staying here, and just as decent 2nd time round. Good stop over on the way South or back North to Calais. We stayed 2 days this time and visited the local town, only a short walk/cycle away. Pool very clean, just a bit cold over a long period for little kids, my 4 year old struggled.
Electric on every pitch, but make sure you fill up with water in a camper before you enter using the motorhome service point outside (small charge for this).
Facilities great and clean.

Tyckte om Everything. The staff are very friendly and work very hard. You get to choose your own pitch. We liked pitch 13 which was a big space for our family and our large tent. While we were staying, there were a mixture of tents, caravans and camper vans and there are some chalets on-site. The site is clean. The wifi is good. The facilities (two blocks of toilets/showers with washing up sinks) are cleaned regularly. The swimming pool area is really good and we loved using the pool and buying an ice cream at the Hippo bar. You get to order pastries and bread for the next day. There’s even some animals on the site (goats, sheep and chickens). And you can use the TV room which has a communal fridge and freezer. The site is in a quiet location near the river Sarthe and the hippodrome/sports facilities (which occasionally hosts horse racing - once during the two weeks we were there). Sablé is a 15 minute walk from the campsite along the river. It’s a small quiet town with a few restaurants and shops. There are big supermarkets nearby like L’Eclerc, Super U and Carrefour, easy to drive to. It’s easy to catch a train from Sablé to Paris which takes under 2 hours (we changed at Le Mans on the way there). It’s a 50 minute drive to Le Mans - worth seeing the lights in the old town in the summer (starts at 9.30pm). It’s an hour north of the Loire river. We visited the castle in Brissac. We enjoyed visiting Sainte Suzanne et Chammes, a pretty village 30 minutes north of the campsite with a fort overlooking the valley. We had a fantastic time at Camping de L’Hippodrome. A very well run site. And you even get to leave at your leisure on the final day. Definitely value for money.

Tyckte om Lovely site, very clean & tidy. Huge pitches with good access. Friendly helpful staff. The site is on the river Sarthe & the walk along the racecourse brings you to the town passing the beautiful chateau. We have never done a municipal site before but will definitely do them again. Nice play area & swimming pool.

Tyckte om Absolutely loved this site. You can see the pride the staff have in their campsite. The staff were super helpful and friendly, the facilities were excellent and we loved our stay here. Unfortunately we were only passing through but I'd have been happy staying here much longer.

There’s nothing like messing about on the river, and you can hire canoes, paddleboards and pedalos on the waterside to potter down the Sarthe, or stroll down to the quay for organised cruises past the grand 18th-century castle in Sablé-sur-Sarthe (five minutes’ walk). There’s masses for culture vultures too, with exhibitions on monastic life at Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes (10 minutes’ drive), and frescoes at St.Hilary Church in the medieval village of Asnières-sur-Vègre (20 minutes). Le Mans (an hour) mixes up Roman and Renaissance architecture, and in Angers (45 minutes) you can explore castles, museums and botanical gardens. Treat the kids to sea lion shows at Zoo de la Flèche (40 minutes), or take them deep underground to see prehistoric remains in the Valley of the Caves of Saulges (30 minutes). And who could resist the chance to dig into regional shortbread after a tour of one of Sablé-sur-Sarthe’s famous biscuit manufacturers?
