Red, blue, green or yellow – you could let your favourite colour dictate which gypsy caravan you choose when you stay at Domaine de la Trille, on a cattle farm in the foothills of the Pyrenees, 45 minutes’ drive from Carcassonne. Alternatively, let the caravans’ themes – bohemian, music, fortune-telling or circus – be your guide. Despite colour and decor variations, however, all wagons are standard in size (24 square metres), and each has a balcony from where you can take in views of lush hillsides (grazed by cattle) and distant mountains.
Each caravan has a double room and a sofa bed in the dining area; a bathroom with a shower cubicle and an eco-friendly composting toilet; and a kitchen corner with hob, microwave oven, kettle, coffee maker, toaster and fridge, plus assorted dishes and utensils.
For those who wish to eat alfresco, there is a balcony with a picnic table; and if you feel like making new friends, you can head to the communal summer kitchen/barbecue area/outdoor lounge, set around a centuries-old chestnut tree. And with an on-site shop selling food items made either on the farm or by trusted local producers, you might not need to travel to the supermarkets of Mirepoix (10 minutes’ drive) at all.
Walking the entire estate takes about two hours and is a good way to ease yourself into the local trails, which include the GR78 (also known as the Pyrenean Foothills Trail) and the GR7; both pass right by the site.

Lokala sevärdheter
Lake Montbel (25 minutes’ drive) is the place for a day of swimming, fishing or paddleboarding – all with spectacular views of the Pyrenees. There are also inflatable structures and a tree-climbing park for kids, plus 16 kilometres of trails to explore on foot, by bike or on horseback.
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Carcassonne (45 minutes) is famed for the fortified walls and towers that enclose its medieval citadel. The Museum of the Inquisition explores the history of religious intolerance and details gruesome torture methods used on supposed heretics.
Known as the Pink City on account of the delicate hue of its historic buildings, Toulouse (an hour) sits on the banks of the Garonne, where the Terrasse du Bazacle is an observation deck with views of the river and its bridges. Stroll through the monumental Place du Capitole, and check out the artworks at Georges Bemberg’s Foundation — Hotel of Assézat or the archaeological collections at Musée Saint-Raymond.
