This shaded site on the banks of a river is a mighty nifty base for exploring the Loire Valley... The basic but well-kept facilities are surrounded by a busy and pioneering farm at Camping Le Moulin de Saussaye. It's surrounded by many trees, where agroforestry plots are used to organically sow plants used in the honey production process, such as flower fallows, sunflowers and buckwheat. It's five minutes' drive from here to the pleasant village of L'Île-Bouchard, cut in two by the Vienne river and home to a bakery, supermarkets and plenty of eating places. The winding river trail from Le Moulin de Saussaye, meanwhile, leads to the handsome village of Crissay-sur-Manse, with its white limestone cottages and ruined 15th-century castle; in summer, the river is pleasant so it's possible to go canoeing there. If you prefer to zip around the countryside on four wheels, the historic towns of Tours, Angers and Saumur can all be reached in under an hour and a half's drive. Sensible sorts should also take time to consider what else the Loire valley is famed for: most happily, the farm is minutes away from the Loire's fab 800-kilometre wine route.

Tyckte om This is a very nice campground at a mill. The mill is still working - at least the wheel is still running - and provides a very nice athmosphere. The pitches are large and you a pick your own.
Sanitary facilities are very clean and there are enough showers/toilets for the campsite.

Tyckte om This site beat all our expectations. We managed to find a spot right by the river under a beautiful willow tree. It was peaceful, quiet but very close to the village. The large supermarket was a 3 minute cycle ride or a 15 minute walk. Everything you need and more under one roof. A pharmacy close by also.
Fantastic cycling right from this campsite. Bars and restaurants close by and a beautiful river that you can go canoeing in.
Very reasonable priced with electronic hook up and they even sell fresh produce from the reception area.
Would highly recommend this camping place. Loved it and will definitely return if ever passing that way. July 2025

Tyckte om Peaceful site with plenty of shade, and an easy going attitude to allow you to select your own pitch. Good sanitary facilities, and home grown organic produce for sale. Feels like it’s the middle of nowhere, but there’s a supermarket 3 mins drive / 10 mins walk away.

Tyckte inte om Although Pitch up asks what time you will arrive, check the opening times to make sure someone will be there. Access is over the bridge - otherwise it’s a three post turn in a narrow lane.

You can't come to the Loire and not look at a château or two... Villandry is half an hour's drive away and an absolute stunner, specifically for its extensive Renaissance gardens. Château Amboise (an hour), built on a spur overlooking the Loire, was so splendidly well appointed that King Charles VII pinched it off its owner and set up residence there. Also an hour away, Château Chenonceau arguably tops the lot, built on arches straddling the Cher river. Saumur (50 minutes), like most Loire towns, is a lovely spot to wander and window shop; it's also home to the famed Cadre Noir riding school, whose balletic displays of horsemanship draw crowds from all over the world. For something out of this world, meanwhile, the digital magic of Futuroscope, a theme park like no other, is just outside Poitiers (50 minutes). After the châteaux, see how the other half lived in the troglodyte village near Rochemenier (an hour). Inhabited until the 1930s, this rock village has subterranean farms and a hidden chapel to explore. Mind your head. From rare housing to rare inhabitants, ZooParc Beauval (an hour) is home to red pandas and white tigers; the sea lions lay on a splendid daily show outdone only by the birds, five hundred of whom – including owls and pelicans, storks and parrots – swoop over your heads in the avian amphitheatre: best bring an umbrella…
