You’ll be staying at the estate of a swish 15th-century castle at Brittany’s Villatent at Domaine du Logis… and while you don’t get to actually hole up inside the handsome building itself it must be said that the safari tents set up out in the grounds are pretty palatial too.
Fittingly for the splendid surroundings, the tents at this park in La Chapelle-aux-Filtzméens are smart, spacious and kitted out with proper beds, a kitchen corner and an ensuite bathroom – plus a decked outside area with seating where you can settle down to survey the setting while the kids play in the safe space in front.
As one might expect, the facilities around here are pretty fancy too: a heated swimming pool is in the castle courtyard, with waterfalls, massage jets, a kids’ pool and a water spray park that should keep the small ones busy for many an hour (yes, there are sun loungers for the grownups to while away those same hours…)
Kids can also hang out over at the play area, or gang up with new pals for high-season games and activities, including the chance to ride ponies a few times a week.
Food and drink are easily sorted too: the castle's outbuildings have been cleverly converted into a restaurant and a bar to create character-packed places to take your evening meals or sip drinks while tapping toes to the live music hosted on site in summer.

Start your explores of the area with a trip to Rennes (half an hour’s drive): the capital of the Ille-et-Vilaine region has a gorgeous medieval centre to wander around (all half-timbered houses, intricate carvings and lovely little cafés) plus some grand architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries to admire.
Turning attentions to the north instead, it’s about a 40-minute drive to the coast at Saint-Malo (or a couple of hours on the bike path that runs alongside the Canal d'Ille et Rance if you’re feeling truly energetic). However you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with a fab stretch of beach and a chance to wander round the ramparts of the old walled city.
There are lots more places to check out up at the coast too, so spend some time checking out towns like Dinard and Cancale or seek out particularly pretty parts of the craggy coastline (Les Rochers Sculptés and Pointe du Grouin are among the highlights).
Something for the kids? Try the zoo and falcon displays at Château de la Bourbansais (10 minutes’ drive) – it’s also got fab formal gardens for those after more grownup wanders.
